What can you make out of salt dough? ›

We love to make salt dough handprints, ornaments, and sometimes, just any old shape they want to. It's an easy project that we can do together—and then share as kid-made holiday gifts, keepsakes, or house decorations.

Children love mixing up salt dough with their hands which is a great sensory experience, and it also helps them to develop fine motor and manipulative skills. The process of rolling, cutting, shaping, and molding the dough into beads is also great for motor skills, manipulative skills and dexterity.

There are three types of pastry dough in a classically trained chef's arsenal that should be known by heart.

With an adult supervising, a 10-year old should be able to scramble eggs, stir fry vegetables or flip a pancake on an electric stovetop (you may want to wait longer if you have a gas range). Safety tip: Be sure to teach them to tie back long hair and never wear loose clothing around the stove.

Cooking with 1-2 Years Old

You can use any herbs, flowers, spices or essences and oils for your scents. We chose to use a mixture of several of these to give each individually coloured dough a different scent. We used dried lavender flowers, fresh rosemary, cinnamon spice, ginger spice, vanilla essence and peppermint oil for our scents.

That said, make sure your ornaments are thoroughly dry before storing them to help prevent mold or any other degradation of your completed craft. And store in a dry place. Dough that is too thin may crack around the edges and dough that is too thick will definitely bubble.

Modge podge works great as a sealer and you can also buy craft varnish (glossy or mat) to seal dough. On its own will last up for a long time without sealing too, if you handle it properly! Sealing will add a nice look to them though, especially if you want them to be glossy.
