As of September 30, 2022, there were 262 Chinese companies listed on these U.S. exchanges with a total market capitalization of $775 billion. This marks a more than half-trillion-dollar drop in the market capitalization of U.S.-listed Chinese firms from June 30, 2022, owing primarily to several major national-level state-owned enterprises (SOEs) delisting in August 2022. Two SOEs remain listed on major U.S. exchanges.
This latest update highlights the U.S.-China agreement on U.S. regulatory oversight inspections of Hong Kong and Chinese auditors which was signed on August 26, 2022. Under the Holding Foreign Companies Accountable Act, at least 131 Chinese companies, representing 98 percent of the market capitalization of Chinese companies listed on these exchanges, are at risk of forced delistings until Chinese regulators demonstrate compliance with the terms of the audit agreement.
This list of Chinese companies was compiled using information from the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, commercial investment databases, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), and annual filings with the Securities Exchange Commission.
