WHAT ARE STANDARD SIZE BALL ORNAMENTS?

Standard size Christmas ball ornaments range from 2” to 4”. These sizes are what most people use for their Christmas trees at home. Smaller sizes are usually used to decorate small table top or potted Christmas trees or as fillers on conventional sized trees. Ball ornaments larger than 4” are mostly used on Christmas trees 9ft and up, with large ball ornaments reserved for giant Christmas trees or to decorate big spaces, such as shopping malls, airports, or hotel lobbies.

HOW BIG SHOULD CHRISTMAS BALLS BE?

The size of Christmas balls should always be proportionate to the size of your Christmas tree. The bigger the tree, the bigger the ball ornaments, and vice versa. 2” to 4” is the typical standard size of Christmas balls used for residential sized Christmas trees up to about 7.5' to 8'. The use of different size ball ornaments provides depth and visual interest when decorating your tree. For example, a mix of 2”, 3”, and 4” ball ornaments allows you to highlight the shape of your tree and accentuate each branch.

As a rule of thumb, the size of a Christmas ball ornament should never overwhelm your tree, but instead complement it. The opposite is true when decorating large spaces with big ball ornaments, such as hotel lobbies, churches, or shopping malls. In this case, you always want to make sure that the space does not outsize the ball ornaments and thereby make them look too small. We recommend using commercial Christmas ornaments that are shatterproof and specifically made for professional decorating.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE A CHRISTMAS BALL ORNAMENT?

The size of an ornament is always provided as the diameter of the ornament. The best way to measure a Christmas ball is to put a ruler next to the ornament – the distance from top to bottom or left to right of the ball ornament is the diameter. This is the size of the ball ornament. For example, if the distance from the top to the bottom of a ball ornament is 4” on a ruler, then this means that the size of the Christmas ball is 4”.
