Deathroot In Elden Ring is a Key Item Collectible found across the Lands Between that is a major part in both D, Hunter of the Dead's Quest Line, and Gurranq the Beast Clergyman. In terms of the game's expansive lore across its vast world, Deathroot is like the Rune of Death given form, and it's got some pretty twisted ties to Godwyn the Golden's tragic tale.

The following weapons in Elden Ring demand an experienced pair of hands.
There are nine to collect for Gurranq to snack on, and they're gathered usually from either a fight with a Tibia Mariner or at the end of a Catacomb exploration, with each one having Gurranq reward the player in some beast-related way, so let's go over where each one is located in the world of Elden Ring.
Updated October 30th, 2023 by Jacob Buchalter: With the first big expansion to Elden Ring somewhere on the horizon in the form of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, the game has had a bit of resurgence in its consistent player base. This news brought in old fans of the game and brand-new players alike, and both of them will likely need some help with a few things. Finding all the Deathroot, for example, or even just remembering where the Hunter of the Dead is first encountered can be a bit hard to recall, so let's go over exactly where each Deathroot can be found.
Deathroot Locations
The images above are in the same order as the table below AKA Image #1 = Deathroot #1 on the table and so on.
# | General Location | Location Specifics |
---|---|---|
1 | Deathtouched Catacombs | At the edge of the Black Knife Assassin boss arena in the reward chest near the return gate. |
2 | Black Knife Catacombs | At the edge of the Cemetary Shade boss arena in the reward chest near the return gate. |
3 | Northeast Limgrave | Obtained automatically after defeating the Tibia Mariner in Summonwater Village. |
4 | Atlus Plateau | Obtained automatically after defeating the Tibia Mariner in Wyndham Ruins. |
5 | East Liurnia of the Lakes | Find and defeat the Tibia Mariner in the woods on the path just west of the Carian Study Hall. |
6 | Mountaintops of the Giants | Automatically obtained alongside Helphen's Steeple from defeating the Tibia Mariner on the cliffside between Castle Sol Main Gate Grace and Snow Valley Ruins Overlook. Essentially, from the Site of Grace look directly southwest, mark the top of that cliffside, then follow it around and up to the Mariner. |
7 | Gelmir Hero's Grave | At the bottom of the Gelmir Hero's Grave at the edge of the Red Wolf of the Champion's boss arena in the reward chest near the return gate. |
8 | Hidden Path to The Haligtree | In a chest after defeating the Stray Mimic Tear in the hidden catacomb area of the Hidden Path. To get here, players must find the invisible bridge area and progress forward from there. |
9 | Giant's Mountaintop Catacombs | At the edge of the Ulcerated Tree Spirit's boss arena in the Giant's Mountaintop Catacombs. It's in the reward chest right near the return gate leading to the Catacomb's entrance. |
Deathroot Rewards
Gurranq has a variety of great rewards for the player, especially in the early game, for each Deathroot given. From Seals to beasti*al Incantations and even Weapons, Gurranq has a little bit of everything. However, each time he gains and devours a new Deathroot, he'll change a bit more, and if players finish his entire questline by giving Gurranq all the Deathroot, he'll actually have a bit of unique dialogue when the Tarnished then encounters him in Farum Azula as Maliketh.
After giving Gurranq the 4th Deathroot and reloading the area (or leaving and coming back at another time), Gurranq will be aggressive and automatically attack the Tarnished on sight. This aggressive state will continue until the Tarnished deals 1k damage to him (without dying of course). After that, he'll calm down and will be in his usual spot once the area is reloaded again.
That said, his Questline isn't what's important now, as players just need to turn in their Deathroot for the rewards, so here are all the rewards that the NPC Merchant Gurranq offers:
Appearance | # | Reward | Type |
---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Clawmark Seal | Incantation Seal |
| 2 | beasti*al Sling | Incantation |
| 3 | beasti*al Vitality | Incantation |
| 4 | Beast's Roar (& Hostile Event Trigger) | Ash of War |
| 5 | Beast Claw | Incantation |
| 6 | Stone of Gurranq | Incantation |
| 7 | Beastclaw Greathammer | Weapon |
| 8 | Gurranq's Beast Claw | Incantation |
| 9 | Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone | Weapon Upgrade Material |
