Fabulous Glitter Crafts Made with Mod Podge (1)

If you love glitter crafts, I’m about to make you very happy. I’m going to be honest, I’ve never loved glitter that much. Have you heard the saying “glitter is the herpes of the craft world?” Haha! Well, I kind of thought the same until a few years ago.

Glitter Craft Ideas

I started using a lot more bling along with Mod Podge, especially in my holiday crafts. I can honestly say that after using it for awhile and seeing the amazing “shparkle” on all of my craft projects, I now LOVE it! There are tricks to using glitter in craft projects – tricks that I’m going to share with you below.

Using Glitter and Mod Podge

You may be wondering where to start. Before you begin a project, you need to consider the two options for application:

  1. Apply Mod Podge to your surface and then sprinkle glitter on top
  2. Mix the glitter and Mod Podge together and brush onto the surface

As you can imagine, the first option doesn’t seal the glitter in – some of it will flake off. But the glitter will remain sparkly! The second option seals in the glitter but yes, Mod Podge does dull it a touch (very slightly!). Read more in the “Sealing” section below.

In terms of brushes, I personally like using a spouncer (which is a little sponge on a stick) for more even application. You can use a soft bristled brush, but it’s harder to apply evenly as you’ll be brushing the glitter around a bit. It’s not impossible to use a regular brush, I just prefer a spouncer and find it easier.

Painting the Surface

A little trick I learned a long time ago that I wanted to share: it helps to paint your surface first with a paint color that matches the glitter. You’ll see that in a lot of the projects in the list in this post.

It fills in the area between glitter particles and helps the glitter pop off the surface. It’s not required, but it does make a big difference!

Mod Podge Formulas

If you love the look of sparkle but don’t love the glittery mess, try Extreme Glitter Mod Podge. The blingy-ness is built in! It’s used in a lot of holiday crafts in addition to day-to-day.

Fabulous Glitter Crafts Made with Mod Podge (2)

There is also a Sparkle Mod Podge (a little less glitter), and Mega Glitter Mod Podge (three shades of intense glitter). Let’s just say, if you aren’t into sprinkling or mixing glitter, these formulas are great options!

IF YOU’RE PLANNING ON WASHING THE ITEM – like a mug or glass – use Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge (along with regular glitter). You’ll see a few tutorials in the list below where you can learn more.

How to Seal Glitter

One of the most common questions I get is how to seal glitter. Should you use Mod Podge? Or something else? Here are the two best options I’ve found after consulting with all of my crafting friends:

  1. Mod Podge over the top of the glitter with a formula like Sparkle Mod Podge or Super Gloss.
  2. Spray with a clear acrylic sealer made for glitter. The consensus is that Krylon makes the best, the favorite being their Glitter Blast clear spray. Use something shiny!

Just my personal advice: if you put an acrylic product, spray or otherwise, over the top of glitter – you should expect that it might dull a little. It’s never been an issue for me.

I personally prefer a slight dull (and it’s not bad in my opinion) over a bunch of loose glitter everywhere. That’s just me though. You’ll need to try it out and make sure you’re happy.

What are your favorite glitter colors? Just for reference, mine are black, orange, and purple (Halloween). Id’ love to hear yours in the comments. Now it’s time for you to check out the 40 crafts I promised, that I know you’ll love. Get them below.
