Simple Salt Dough Recipe for Kids

This is a flour salt dough recipe. Feel free to use gluten free flour for those kiddos with gluten sensitivities or allergies. 🙂

• 2 cups flour
• 1 cup salt
• 1 cup warm water

This is such an easy salt dough recipe for ornaments at Christmastime!

Salt dough handprint ornaments are super special to make each year to track growth or to give to grandparents as gifts.

You can make it and store it for a few months to play with.

Let your creations air dry or bake when done or store it in a baggie to reuse in play over and over.

Salt Dough Recipe for Crafts

1. Make sure the flour and salt are sifted in a large bowl.

2. Mix flour and salt well.

3. Add warm water slowly as you mix.

4. Knead the dough carefully and slowly.

Make sure it isn’t too dry or too sticky.If it’s too dry, it will crack in the oven.

If it is too sticky, it won’t bake well or hold its shape.Add extra water or flour as needed.

Roll out the dough evenly on the counter, table or parchment paper.

How to Make Salt Dough

OPTION A
1. Turn oven on to 200 degrees.
2. Put works of art on oven-safe baking sheet. You might need more, depending on the size and amount of the stuff you’ve made.
3. Bake for 60 minutes for a 6×6-inch project. Go with less time if smaller.

OPTION B
1. Put works of art on microwave-safe plates or platters.
2. Microwave for 2 minutes.
3. Check them. If they look done, you’re done!
If they aren’t ready, zap for 30 seconds at a time until they are done.
It shouldn’t take more than 4 minutes.

Decorating Salt Dough Creations

The sky is the limit!

You can use food coloring in the dough before baking.

But I recommend decorating with tempera paint, acrylic paints, permanent markers, fabric markers, fabric paint, ink, glitter and glue, stickers, whatever!

Some like mod podge and polyurethane spray. Be careful with these, though!

Storage

If you didn’t use it all up, you can always put it in a zipper plastic bag and double bag it, making sure all the air is out.

It should hold for a few weeks. If it starts to get sticky, just add more flour.

Optional: Add a drop or two of essential oils at the back of each ornament.

It’s a nice and thoughtful gesture if given as gifts.

Tip: For nice circles when making ornaments, use a straw.
