How many 9in balls in circumference can fit in a box that is 301.5L x 96.99W x 105.04H (2)

Arturo O.

This is about the 7th time I see this same problem, although in an earlier posting the diameter was given as 9 inches. (Maybe we will see it again with the RADIUS given as 9 inches?)

Anyway, you need to know the diameter of the balls. Divide each dimension of the box by the diameter, rounding down to the next lower integer as needed. That gives you how many balls you can place side by side along the length and width, and how many you can stack vertically along the height. Then multiply the 3 integer ratios to get the number that fit in the box. Follow Andrew's solution.

A mistake to avoid is to divide the box volume by the cube of the ball diameter, because that will give fractional results.

Assuming your box dimensions are in inches:

C = 2πr = πd = 9

diameter of 1 ball = 9/π = 2.865 inches

Length: 301.5/2.865 = 105.24 ... 105 balls long

Width: 96.99/2.865 =33.85 = 33 balls wide

Height: 105.04/2.865 = 36.66 = 36 balls high

105(33)(36) = 124,740 balls in total

The person receiving it repeats, “Red ball” as they take it. They give it to someone else, saying “Red ball” and making eye contact as they pass it. That person repeats “Red ball” as they receive it, and so on. This continues until everyone in the circle has had the ball a couple of times.

Why is it 4 balls instead of 3? ›

My understanding is the rational around establishing the four balls and three strikes standard was to make things equal between the batter and the pitcher (i.e., that the batter had a 50 percent chance of getting on base).
