These DIY glitter wine glasses are perfect for adding a bit of sparkle to your holiday gatherings.
My DIY glitter mugs are one of my most popular projects ever and people have been asking me if the same technique works for wine glasses and it does!
It is important to keep in mind the 30 day cure time for these glasses so if you want them for Christmas, be sure to get started now so that they have time to cure and become totally waterproof and top rack dishwasher safe.

This product has become increasingly hard to find but Dishwasher Safe Mod Podgeis made by the same company (Plaid Crafts) and the directions for using this product are the same and will achieve the same result.
**Glitter has become quite the controversial craft supply but better glitters are now available! Always use safe glittering practices by not rinsing glitter down the drain and looking for glitters labeled as biodegradable.
How to make glitter wine glasses step 1:
Use the masking tape to tape off a line where you want the glitter to go.
It's important for the lower edge of the tape to firmly adhere against the glass but the top edge doesn't need to.
How to make glitter wine glasses step 2:
Use a paintbrush to brush the Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge (NOTE: this will ONLY work with Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge - do not use any other formula)all over the bottom of the wine glass below the line you taped off.
I do not paint on the flat part that sits on the table but you could if you wanted to.
While the Mod Podge is still wet, generously douse the bottom of the glass in glitter, catching any excess on a piece of paper or a glitter tray to pour back into the bottle.
Gently peel away the masking tape while the Mod Podge is still wet.
NOTE: Do not let the Mod Podge dry before removing the tape or bad things will happen!
Place the glasses upside down (standing on the drinking edge) and allow them to dry completely or for a minimum of four hours.
How to make glitter wine glasses step 3:
If there are thin spots in the glitter, now is the time to touch them up as needed with a light coat of Mod Podge and glitter.
Pro tip: Hold your glass up to the light for help telling where the thin spots on the wine glass are that need more glitter.
Allow the wine glasses to dry completely or for at least four hours before moving on to step 4.
If your glitter wine glasses looked good and didn't need to be touched up, jump ahead to step 4!
How to seal the glitter on the wine glasses:
Use a large soft paintbrush (DO NOT use a sponge brush for this as it tends to grab the glitter), gently brush a thicker layer of Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge over the glitter.
Because this is a thicker coat, it may take a long time to dry - this is expected.
Just set it aside in a place where it won't be touched and check on it after about 12 hours (depending on temperature and humidity).
IMPORTANT!
You need to let your glitter wine glasses sit until the Mod Podge is all of the below:
- dry to the touch
- the glitter does not move or shift if touched
- the Mod Podge has dried clear with no traces of white or cloudiness
If you aren't quite sure if the Mod Podge is completely set on the glitter, let it sit for another 24 hours before moving on to be safe.
Once the first sealing layer is completely set, use a large soft paintbrush to paint another layer of Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge over the glitter and allow to dry upside down once again.

This part is really, REALLY, really important for your glitter glasses turning out right:
If you want your beautiful new glitter wine glasses to be dishwasher safe that you let them sit and cure for 30 days.
I know that 30 days feels like forever, but do not try to cut this short.
If you cheat and use your glasses before the 30 days is over, you need to RESTART the 30 days to let the entire curing process happen or you will have disastrous results.
This is the number one reason why people email me and tell me their glasses did not turn out: because they did NOT let them sit for 30 full days to cure.
SO do yourself a favor and put them away and don't touch them for a month.
I have made this project multiple times. My oldest glass with glitter on it is five years old (I made it for the tutorial for how to apply glitter to a mason jar) and it is my kids' FAVORITE glass so it gets a lot of use.
After five years all the glitter is still firmly in place because we followed the curing timeline.

FAQ and Troubleshooting for Glitter Wine Glasses
I first published this project in 2017 so I have fielded a lot of questions and helped people troubleshoot what went wrong with their project. Hopefully these useful tips will help your project turn out awesome!
What can I use to seal glitter on glass?
For best results, I recommend using Dishwasher Safe Mod Podgefollowing the directions above to both adhere the glitter to the glass as well as to seal it to the glasses.
When following the directions as-written, no additional sealer is necessary.
Can I make glitter wine glasses with Mod Podge?
YES - as long as it is the Dishwasher Safe Mod Podgewith a blue label.
This project DOES NOT WORK with any other formula of Mod Podge. Do not ues traditional red or yellow label Mod Podge or any homemade "Mod Podge" to do this project. It won't turn out.
Can I seal the glitter with hairspray?
No. If you make this project following the directions for applying the glitter with Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge and sealing the glitter with Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge, the glitter will have permanently adhered to the glass.
It will not shed and no additional sealer is needed.
How do you keep glitter from falling off?
If you watch the video of me making the glitter glasses, you can see that after I apply the glitter to the wet decoupage medium (Mod Podge), I tap the glass vigorously.
This is to remove glitter that is not actually stuck to the glass.
Once you have done this, let the Mod Podge or decoupage medium dry fully. If you need to touch up some spots or add another coat of glitter, apply another coat of Mod Podge or decoupage medium, apply the glitter, tap to remove it and allow to dry completely.
Once the medium is totally dry, use more dishwasher safe Mod Podge or decoupage medium to seal the glitter to the glass.
This will keep it from falling off or shedding.
Is Mod Podge waterproof?
Regular formula Mod Podge is NOTwaterproof. However, the Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge(with a blue label that says "Dishwasher Safe" IS waterproof once it has been applied and allowed to cure for 30 days.
Yes, I know 30 days seems like forever but it's really worth it.
Don't use any other formula of Mod Podge or your glitter glasses won't turn out and you will be sad.
Does Mod Podge Dry Clear on Glitter
Yes. The finished projects shown below have been sealed and the sealer is clear.
If your Martha Stewart Decoupage Medium or Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge is cloudy, it is either because it is not dry all the way OR because you did not allow the formula to cure for the full 30 days before using and washing.
Can you bake glitter wine glasses in the oven to cure them?
No. Do not bake these glasses in the oven!
Glitter is not designed to withstand high heat and will melt.
If you want to make DIY wine glasses that have both glitter and some other type of design that needs to be heat set, apply the design to be heat set FIRST.
Once it is cured and set, then follow the directions in this tutorial for applying the glitter.
My glitter got gloopy and dripped off the wine glass.
If this happens, you applied too much Mod Podge or decoupage medium. You should apply a generous coat, but not so generous that it is drippy.
Spread the Mod Podge evenly on the wine glasses before applying glitter and then be sure to
let it dry completlybefore adding additional coats of Mod Podge or glitter.

Get crafty and whip up your own DIY glitter wine glasses that are even washable! The Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge formula along with a specific curing time is the secret to making this glitter glasses project work! This is a great way to upgrade old wine glasses you aren't using or don't love and make them new again.

How to Glitter Wine Glasses

- Peel away the masking tape while the Mod Podge is still wet.
- Place the glasses upside down to allow them to dry completely or for a minimum of four hours.
- If after drying completely, there are areas where the glitter is thin touch them up as needed with a light coat of Mod Podge and glitter.
How to seal glitter to glass
- Using a large, soft paintbrush, apply a thick layer of Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge over the dried glitter layer.
- Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely (you will know it is dry when it is dry to the touch, the glitter does not move or shift if touched, the Mod Podge has dried clear with no traces of white or cloudiness).
- Once the first sealing layer is completely dry, use a large soft paintbrush to paint another layer of Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge over the glitter and allow to dry upside down once again.
- Allow wine glasses to sit for 30 full days to allow the dishwasher safe Mod Podge formula to fully cure and become dishwasher safe.
NOTES:
This project only works with DISHWASHER SAFE formula Mod Podge. Every other formula is water soluable and will not be safe to wash.
