If you know any French, the word “cinquain” probably makes you think of the number 5, which is “cinq” in French. Originally, a cinquain poem was any poem of five lines, but the definition has evolved over the years.
Inspired by the Japanese forms of haiku and tanka, Adelaide Crapsey (1878–1914) invented the modern American cinquain.
