Do biscuits work in MDF? ›
Biscuits are ideal for MDF, IMHO. I use biscuits in all my MDF projects.
Can you biscuit joint 12mm MDF? ›A biscuit jointer will adjust to thinner thicknesses and also for smaller biscuits. You need to take care that you have centred the guide and support the work in such a way so that you have clearance under the sole plate of the jointer. The 18mm will be easier to work with but you can do 12mmm okay.

MDF and moisture do not get along. If not sealed in a humid environment, it will warp and swell. Most MDF contains urea-formaldehyde, a suspected carcinogen, and other Volatile Organic Chemicals (VOCs).
However, the most common biscuit joint sizes are as follows:
- #0: 5/8 inch by 1 3/4 inches.
- #10: 3/4 inch by 2 1/8 inches.
- #20: 1 inch by 2 3/8 inches.

Thickness: The thicker the board, the stronger and more weight it can support. Choose at least 18mm for most shelving applications, considering intended weight and shelf dimensions. Quality: Higher-density MDF (800kg/m³ or above) offers better structural integrity and resists warping.
What is the best way to join 18mm MDF? ›The best way of joining is, of course, with glue. This way, no holes are created in the material and you can finish the end result nice and smooth.
Which is better, biscuit or dowel? ›Biscuits don't really add much strength. They are more for alignment, where the dowels will add a good deal of strength. In my use of biscuits they are designed to keep joints from pulling apart. The clearances the cutter makes to insert the biscuit allows for enough movement that alignment is not guaranteed.

Attaching a suitable blade with between 7-12 TPI (teeth-per-inch) will reduce tear off and fibres. A lower TPI range works well for rough cuts but be sure to increase the TPI for more precision.
