Now that you've found the right Christmas tree for your home, it's time for the fun and creative task of decorating it. But do you know exactly how many lights and baubles your Christmas tree needs for its size?
To help you decorate like a pro, Christmas Tree World has created a clever online calculator that provides users with the formula for the perfect tree — and it's so simple.
All you need to do is click how tall your tree is (for example 7ft), followed by how big your baubles are, how full you want your tree to be (do you want minimalist or jam-packed), and finally tick what shape your tree is. Then, scroll down and the calculator will do the hard work for you.
If you have a 6ft full tree with medium-sized baubles, then you will need 166 ornaments and 780 LED lights. For those of you with a smaller 4ft tree adorned with large baubles and a minimalist look, the calculator predicts you will need 25 baubles and 234 lights.

"There's no right or wrong way to go about it, but to help make things a little bit easier, we've created the following calculator to estimate the minimum number of baubles and lights you need to make your tree sparkle."

Wired magazine has shared the “science of decorating the perfect Christmas tree”, including the ideal bauble ratio: about 6.2 baubles to each foot (30.4cm) of tree. Smaller trees will need fewer. About 100 fairy lights to one foot of tree is said to be “a very standard rule in the Christmas tree industry”.
If you have a 6ft full tree with medium-sized baubles, then you will need 166 ornaments and 780 LED lights. For those of you with a smaller 4ft tree adorned with large baubles and a minimalist look, the calculator predicts you will need 25 baubles and 234 lights.
If you're using tinsel, this is the time to put it on your tree - always before your decorations and ornaments to avoid the tinsel snagging. Tinsel is a simple and easy way to add colour to your tree, but it's best to use it sparingly. You don't need to overload your Christmas tree with it.
Work your way from the bottom of the tree to the top and hang the larger baubles and decorations lower down for a more balanced look. The heavier ones are best placed at the back of the branch, closer to the trunk to avoid the branch sagging.
A 6 foot Christmas tree will need at least 128 pieces, a 7 foot Christmas tree will need at least 196 decorations, and an 8 foot Christmas tree will need a minimum of 212.
Here's what to consider as you're adding Christmas tree decorations. To showcase your favorite ornaments, place them in prime positions on the tree first. Next, hang your larger ornaments, spacing them evenly around the tree.
A five foot tree needs 120 lights and 40 decorations, while a six footer can apparently take 240 bulbs and 50 baubles. But if your house is big enough to put up a tree over seven foot then you can get away with anything between 400-1000 lights and 90 baubles.
For trees under 9 feet, we recommend using 10-15 standard size ornaments per foot. If your tree is 9 feet or taller, we recommend 12-20 ornaments per foot.
Many choose Thanksgiving Day as a marker to the end of fall and the beginning of winter—and what better way to usher in winter than with a Christmas tree? In fact, most home etiquette writers say that Black Friday is the earliest you should put up your Christmas tree.
Hanging the Christmas ornaments on the tree is one of the most exciting parts of decorating the tree for most people. Before you start hanging your Christmas ornaments, we recommend that you hang the lights and garland first.
While a 6-8cm bauble is a standard size, a modern take on decorating your Christmas tree is to incorporate larger baubles which will add depth and a dramatic finishing touch.
The best way to measure a Christmas ball is to put a ruler next to the ornament – the distance from top to bottom or left to right of the ball ornament is the diameter. This is the size of the ball ornament.
A 10cm bauble is considered the norm, and if your tree can withstand something more giganteum, then what are you waiting for. These beauties are more than three times the size of the traditional bauble – bigger, better, bowling into our sitting rooms to steal the limelight from the Christmas fairy.
How Many Lights Do I Need For A 7ft Tree? We recommend 15 metres of lights for a 6ft Christmas tree, but if you have space for a larger tree, for every extra foot of height simply add another 5 metres of lights. So for a 7ft tree, we would suggest using 20 metres of lights.
If your tree is real or it's not already pre-lit, put lights on it first. A fluffed up, lit tree is the foundation for any beautifully decorated Christmas tree. I always put ribbon on a lit Christmas tree before adding anything else. It makes it so much easier than having to work around ornaments.
Use a mix of both large and small ornaments, but hang the largest ornaments first and then follow up with the medium sized ones and then the smaller ornaments. Try nestling large tree ornaments slightly into the tree instead of just hanging them on the tips of the branches.
Dark blue and black add a graceful depth to the theme, which is enhanced by gold and white accents. Traditional Christmas motifs round out the festive mood. Classic Christmas shines in fresh and bold colors.
Colours for the coming Christmas 2022 will include metallic silver and metallic gold, different shades of green, associated with grass and leaves as natural elements.Space will also be given to pink and soft blue, romantic and rather unusual colours for Christmas décor, but which will be on trend this year.
After all, red and white baubles go hand-in-hand. You can alternate solid red and white baubles or opt for a red and white bauble set with swirls and stripes.
The calculator will tell you that you need 74 ornaments for a "natural" or moderate looking tree along with 13-feet of lights. If you prefer something with that wow factor, the calculator will tell you that you need 246 baubles for a "dense" appearance, and it'll give you a photographic model of what that looks like.
“A good rule of thumb is 100 lights for every foot-and-a-half of tree,” according to Lowe's. But Better Homes & Gardens recommends using three 100-light sets for every foot of a tree's height. And Real Simple suggests 100 lights for every foot.
There are a bunch of tips online about using 7UP to extend the life of your Christmas tree. According to a Q&A on Gardens Alive, 7UP is the “best addition” to watering your tree and should be added, along with water, every few days.
Don't overcrowd your Christmas tree with too many lights. It is not good for the tree and doesn't improve the look. Sometimes – fewer can be much better.
For a basic look our number one rule is at least 100 bulbs per 1ft of tree – so that would mean a 6ft tree needs a minimum of 600 LEDs. For a fuller look, you can add as many lights as you want but we recommend upwards of 700 for a 6ft tree.
To give your Christmas tree a professional look, string them a little randomly, to give your lights a more organic, natural feel. As you work, place some lights deeper into the branches and place some closer to the front to create depth.
For trees under 9 feet, we recommend using 10-15 standard size ornaments per foot. If your tree is 9 feet or taller, we recommend 12-20 ornaments per foot.
Say, for example, you have a 5-foot-tall tree, that's about 3 feet wide and full in shape. The calculator will tell you that you need 74 ornaments for a "natural" or moderate looking tree along with 13-feet of lights.
A 6 foot Christmas tree will need at least 128 pieces, a 7 foot Christmas tree will need at least 196 decorations, and an 8 foot Christmas tree will need a minimum of 212.
Regarding how much ribbon you'll need, it will vary depending on how you wrap your tree, but Christmas Central suggests using about nine feet of garland per foot of the tree.
