Will tacky polyurethane eventually dry? ›

Polyurethane is usually dry to the touch between 2 – 12 hours. If polyurethane still feels sticky after 48 hours, it could be that the wood has natural oil preventing the polyurethane from drying. Once the first coat dries, the subsequent polyurethane coats should be fine.

Poly has a naturally rubbery texture especially if you have a thick coat. You might try sanding with high grit sandpaper to break it up. Alternately you can put another layer of finish on--something that dries to a hard coat, like shellac. Save this answer.

By applying thick layers of polyurethane, the puddles can easily occur, because you cannot apply a uniform layer throughout the surface. Some places will be thin and some are extra thick and cause getting puddles.

Tip: Before use, a can of polyurethane should be stirred, not shaken. Shaking can introduce air bubbles in the finish that could make an uneven coat.

Typical Values. In general, polyurethane can be used in the temperature range of -62°C to 93°C (-80°F to 200°F). Special formulations can extend polyurethane's performance reach to as high as 150°C (300°F).

Applications with long-term operating temperatures below -0°F can stiffen the urethane, altering the material's physical properties. Temperatures lower than -80°F will turn the material brittle, therefore, increase the likelihood of tearing and/or ripping apart.

Polyurethanes coatings are sensitive to moisture. In fact, it is the curing agent, usually Component B that is most sensitive. The technical datasheet of the product should tell you what humidity is reasonable; however, in general you should try to control the humidity in your facility to below approximately 70%.

If the external conditions are cold, just apply some heat.

Adding a heat source when the weather is too cold will speed up the drying process of your polyurethane. You can use a hairdryer or a wall heater – just ensure that you are only using gentle heating, as too much will impact the overall finish.

Put on the polish

Apply only one thin coat. Then, remove any dust nibs with 1,500-grit sandpaper or a piece of brown paper bag. Finally, using a soft cotton rag or polishing pad, buff the finish to a high shine using automotive paste wax, photo below, which has fine abrasives that polish the finish even further.

For some types of poly, nothing happens if you don't sand between coats of polyurethane. However, most polyurethane will not adhere properly if you skip sanding dust nibs and brush marks on the finish. The polyurethane finish will eventually peel off or become deformed.

Option 1: Use mineral spirits

For a small project, the easiest solution is to wipe the surface with a cloth dampened with some mineral spirits. The spirits effectively dissolve the tacky pigments without affecting the stained wood surface.
