How do you prepare wood for engraving? ›

I usually just give it a coat of clear lacquer, but sometimes a light sanding first blow off the dust and then the clear. Stain and clear coat your wood before engraving, after engraving seal the engraving with clear coat prior to any fills, seems to work best for me this way.

The surface of the wood needs to be as smooth as possible before engraving, this is achieved by sanding the surface to remove loose fibres of wood and uneven areas.

Your project should be finish sanded and sealed before laser engraving. Sealing is necessary to prevent smoke staining of the wood, unless this is an effect you desire. After engraving, you may LIGHTLY sand the surface and then apply your final finish coats which will also seal the engraving.

To engrave on wood, you start with a wooden surface where you will inscribe the design. Then stamp or draw the design pattern on the surface using ink or pencil. Finally, you use the tools to etch the design. This process is the same for both chisel and rotary tools.

Antiquing: This paint-like process is very simple yet effective if you want to just touch up your engraving and make it a bit darker in order for it to stand out. The jeweler simply rubs the antiquing formula over the engraving, and lets it fill in the carving.

Engraving is an intaglio printmaking process in which lines are cut into a metal plate in order to hold the ink. In engraving, the plate can be made of copper or zinc. The metal plate is first polished to remove all scratches and imperfections from the surface so that only the intentional lines will be printed.

To clean your laser engraved wood, dab your paper towel in vinegar (you can also use a soft piece of cloth) and then use it to wipe off the residue on your wood. Simply repeat the process until you are satisfied with the result.

Sometimes, applying a thin, wet sheet of newspaper or a paper towel to the engraving area will help with heat dissipation and improve the engraving process. Just make sure there are no wrinkles in the paper after it is applied.

Use Transfer Tape on the Surface of the Wood

You can tack masking tape to the surface of the wood, but application tape comes in a ready-made wide roll and works perfectly with a laser engraver. You can apply the tape to both sides of your product for a perfectly clean finish.

Step 1: Prepping the Wood

The very first step in making a laser cut wood sign is painting and masking the wood. I painted my wood round with a coat of white paint and allowed it to dry completely before masking the painted side with paper masking tape.

Does the stain affect the colour/appearance of the engraving? As long a sthe stain has had time to dry it should not be a problem since what we see in stained wood is simply a pigment that has collected in the wood's grain.
