Many mayors make shaking the Trees a daily routine along with digging fossils and pulling weeds. There are six possible outcomes to shaking trees: harvest the Fruit, get 100 bells, get a piece of Furniture, disturb a beehive, find a bug, or nothing.

To shake a tree, put away all your tools, stand next to the tree (preferably at the 3-o'clock, 9-o'clock, or 12-o'clock positions), and press A.

Note: If ALL your trees contain ripe fruit, you will not get bells, beehives, or furniture from any trees. You should leave some non-fruit trees in your forest if you want to collect these free items each day.

Harvest the fruit

If you shake a tree that contains fruit, the ripe fruits will fall to the ground where you can then pick them up by pressing Y on each one. Fruit trees will drop three fruits, while tropical palms will drop either two coconuts or two bunches of bananas.

Some trees give perfect fruit. These fruits look slightly different from the normal varieties. Perfect fruit is worth more bells at Nook's and at Re-Tail, but it can also be planted to harvest perfect fruit a number of times before the tree is exhausted and starts giving some perfect fruit and some rotten fruits.

Note: Only your native tree type will grow perfect fruit.

Get 100 bells

Completely self explanatory, some trees will shake down 100 bells. These bells can be combined in your pockets, and can be dragged to your bell total to put them away.

Each day (if you have enough non-fruited trees), you can shake 100 bells down from 20 trees (2000 bells total).

Get a piece of furniture

If you have trees without fruit on them at 6 am, two trees will contain pieces of Furniture. These will drift down from the trees as large green leaves which can be picked up using Y just like any other item.

Disturb a beehive

Bees will sting you! That is, if you don't manage to either whip out your net and catch them in time, or if you don't manage to evade them by running into a house or building quickly enough.

Bees are worth 2500 bells, so it's worth attempting, and the beehive that falls on the ground is worth 500 bells so you should pick it up to sell it later.

Bee stings can be cured with Medicine or time (saving and quitting).

Beehives do not ever appear in fruit trees, even if the fruit has been harvested.

Note: the number of trees that contain beehives is related to the number of trees with mature fruit, to a maximum of five per day. If you have NO mature fruit in your forests and orchards when you start a day, you will also have no beehives.

Avoiding getting stung

There are several ways to avoid getting stung.

  • Escape into a building: if you run into a neighbor's house, your house, or any other town building quickly enough, the bees will fly away harmlessly. The beehive will still be on the ground when you come out of hiding.
  • Catch the bees: as soon as you hear the bee sound, open your pockets and equip your net. Close your pockets by pressing B, and then catch the bees. You can then pick up the beehive. Catching bees takes timing and practice! See more hints for catching the bees on the Bees page.
  • Invite visitors: if your town gate is open to visitors, no beehives will fall from your trees.
  • Save your game: If you press Select and then choose Save and continue, the bees will be interrupted and will fly away without stinging you. The beehive will be on the ground when the save process is completed.
  • Running away: Even if you have a clear path in front of you, you cannot outrun the bees. They will catch up to you and sting you.

Find a bug

Sometimes, a Spider or Bagworm will emerge from inside the tree. Quick action with your net can let you catch it!

Nothing

When you shake many of your trees, nothing will happen. Shaking the trees does not hurt them and the leaves that drift down are harmless. Better luck next time!
