Why are Smarties not sold in the US? ›

Smarties are not distributed (except via parallel import) in the United States, where the rights to the name belong to the Smarties Candy Company, which manufactures its own hard tablet sweet under the registered trademark name Smarties. In 2012, the Smarties production moved from York to Hamburg.

The blue sweets were first introduced in 1989 - and discontinued in 2006 as part of a drive to remove artificial ingredients in children's food. Makers Nestle say the new colouring comes from a seaweed called spirulina.

These are the Smarties you'll find in the USA. The reason why Rockets are labelled as Smarties in the USA, and that the Canada/US type Smarties are not sold in the USA, is because in the United States, the Smarties brand is owned by the Smarties Candy Company (formerly Ce De Candy).

Candy with nuts is your healthiest option, but if you're into sugary sweets, Smarties are the healthiest option. One serving of Smarties contains just 25 calories and 6 grams of sugar. For comparison, Sour Patch Kids contain 110 calories and 24 grams of sugar in one serving.

Why can't I find Smarties® outside of the United States? We only sell our brand of Smarties^® in the United States.

To spare you a bit of confusion, remember: Smarties in the U.K. and Canada contain chocolate, while the U.S. version does not. U.S. Smarties are small, disk-like sugar wafers, while Nestle Smarties in the U.K. and Canada resemble M&M's. If you want to enjoy American-style Smarties in Canada, look for Rockets.
