Cars, along with surfing and girls, often served as themes inthe Beach Boys early songs.

The Deuce Coupe was described as a 1932 Ford Model 18 with a V8 engine, popular with hot rod builders in the 1950s because the carswere available and cheap. The cars were called "deuce" because of the two in the model year.

How did the Sam Conrad car windup in Stark County?

Once the song was released in July 1963, the Beach Boys found themselves in several photo shoots with different 1932 Deuce Coupes.

The car at Black Horse is known as Sam Conrad's Little Deuce Coupe.

Phil Dimos and Chris Brosch, co-owners at Black Horse Motors, bought the car but may be selling it soon. Plans are to list the car in the Barrett-Jackson 50th anniversary auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.

There's interest in the car from hot rod fans, music fans and people who like rare old vehicles, Dimos and Brosch said.

"It's a crazy piece of history," said Dimos, who opened Black Horse Motors in January.

The car appeals to everyone, Brosch said. "Your inner child comes out," he said of the reaction when he sees the car.

'Hod Rods to Hell' and more carsof the day

Conrad was a hot rod enthusiast living in Southern California and an original memberof the L.A. Roadsters hot rod club. He built his Deuce Coupe with help from other club members.

Conraduseda collection of cars to build his vehicle. Dimos said said the frame comes from a 1929 Ford, while the body is from a 1932 Ford. The car now has a Chevrolet engine, but for many years the engine was one from an Oldsmobile.

Owners have made changes through the years. Dimos and Brosch said they had the vehicle restored to its look in the 1963 photo.

L.A. Roadsters members often were asked to provide cars for promotional events or movies, Brosch said. That's how Conrad's car ended up being surrounded by Beach Boys outside Capitol records.

The car also was featured in the 1967movie "Hot Rods to Hell" and has been used in other movies, Brosch said.

Conrad owned the car until 1968, when he sold it to another hot rod enthusiast, Bob Gorby, who was from Terre Haute, Indiana.Gorby owned the car for more than 40 years, Brosch said.

Dimos said plans for shipping the car to Arizona still are being finalized. Until then, curious hot rod fans are welcome to drop by the dealership at 5859 Wales Ave. NW and take a look, he said.
