The two most popular ways of drying your own timber is by kiln or in open-air. Air dried wood contains much less moisture than green wood, but a little bit more than the faster and more aggressive method of Kiln drying.

Wood stabilization is the process of strengthening wood so that it will no longer respond to changes in humidity. Stabilization can be performed in five steps: drying the wood, loading the vacuum chamber, saturating the wood with resin, curing the wood, and coloring the wood.

Air-drying and solar kiln drying are the most economical ways to remove much of the water from green lumber. Correct exposure of lumber to the outside air can reduce moisture content to 14–19 percent; lumber at this moisture content is suitable for many construction uses and exterior applications.

Wood drying (also seasoning lumber or wood seasoning) reduces the moisture content of wood before its use. When the drying is done in a kiln, the product is known as kiln-dried timber or lumber, whereas air drying is the more traditional method.

Fill the container with Pentarcryl if the wood is freshly cut. Pentacryl is a specially formulated wood stabilizer that's designed to keep green or fresh wood from cracking as it dries. If your wood slice was recently cut and hasn't had a chance to air-dry yet, fill your container with Pentacryl to soak your wood.

You could also look online for directions on drying wood in a microwave. Many folks have had good success with that method. Regardless of what method you use, once you get them "dry", you need to further dry them to oven dry state in an oven at 220° F for a minimum of 24 hours for best stabilizing results.

Nothing fancy here, a standard toaster oven is the “go-to” hobbyist's dry oven for this process. Set your toaster oven to 220° F and place your wood inside. After several hours take your piece of wood out and note the weight and time. Place your piece of wood back in the oven for several more hours.

Pentacryl is the premier green wood stabilizer, which means you use it to stabilize your freshly cut, green wood. It works by replacing the water molecules in the wood. The modified polymers in Pentacryl, in turn leave a thin coating on the wood cells walls which prevents the cells from shrinking.

Wood will become “dry” by letting it sit for a long enough period of time. A rule of thumb that is thrown around often is one year of air drying time per one inch of wood thickness. A dryer or kiln can be used to reduce the moisture content more rapidly.

Locate or construct an enclosed building that contains fans capable of moving and recycling hot air. Place your stickered lumber inside the building to force air-dry or pre-dry your lumber. Consider drying your wood in a kiln. For a price, many sawmills will cure green wood, or freshly milled wood, for you.

To get a more accurate reading, you could split a few pieces and test the moisture inside, as well. To get green wood to less than 20% moisture takes at least six months. Freshly cut wood will have bound and unbound moisture. The latter is released fairly easily and can get the wood down to 25 to 30% moisture content.

Firewood needs to be dried from its freshly cut moisture level to below 20%, preferably to 15%. Softwood that is split and stacked in a dry place takes 4-6 summer months to dry to an acceptable moisture level. Hardwoods take at least 12 months to dry after being split and stacked.

The traditional rule-of-thumb for air-drying lumber is to allow one year of drying time per inch of wood thickness; this adage obviously only takes a few of the aforementioned variables into account, but it's at least a rough starting point in understanding the time investment required in order to properly air-dry ...
