The Engraving Process

1) The Fibermark Laser - Our personal favorite. This machine is strong enough to actually etch into the stainless steel of your YETI. We recommend this because it is a permanent marking on your cup. It will not rub off with use or peel or scratch off.

Unless you cut out the bottom of your glowforge, as some have done, a YETI tumbler is too big, even with the crumb tray removed. Something else with a rotary attachment would be better for this. Unless your yeti's are less than 2" wide, this won't work.

What is the thickest material Glowforge can cut? Glowforge performs well with many materials 1/4" and less on a single pass. It can accommodate material as thick as 1/2", but may require multiple passes or flipping the material over. For engraving, you can remove the tray and insert objects as thick as 2”.

Antiquing: This paint-like process is very simple yet effective if you want to just touch up your engraving and make it a bit darker in order for it to stand out. The jeweler simply rubs the antiquing formula over the engraving, and lets it fill in the carving.

Just before application, again ensure that the surface is perfectly clean. Using some masking tape, mark the borders of the surface you plan to etch. Apply etching spray evenly on the metal surface. If you're using dry lube, spray two or three layers, leaving each time to dry before applying the next one.

Stainless steel laser engraving is generally carried out with increased laser power and lower marking speeds and several passes. Multiple passes of the laser beam will remove more material and produce cleaner engraving and edges. The larger number of laser passes allows for deeper marking.

A good rule of thumb is that the line width of the engraving should be equal to or greater than the depth of the engraving. You cannot engrave a 0.003-inch-wide character 0.010 inch deep and maintain a flat floor finish, but you can engrave a 0.003-inch-wide character 0.003 inch deep.

How does speed affect laser engraving? ›

Obviously the faster it moves, the less time it will take for your project to complete. Less time = less cost. Power is how powerfully the laser fires regardless of speed. The more power, the darker and deeper your engravings will be and the thicker the materials we'll be able to cut through.

BMP - a bitmap file is used for engraving only (such as scanned pictures, photographs etc. DXF - this popular vector file can be used for cutting and engraving. AI - this vector file format can be used for cutting and engraving.

The only image format that the laser cutter accepts is the Windows Bitmap (BMP) format. The bitmap must be monochrome (1-bit). The laser beam burns the pixels row by row in the bitmap – the laser is on for black pixels and off for the white (background) pixels.
