Whether you’re trying to complete Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s “Little Sister’s Big Request” side mission or just trying to make an electro elixir, you’ll eventually find yourself in need of an electric darner. These dragonflies are unique because they only come out when it’s raining.
The easiest way to get some electric darners is to just buy them. Head to Riverside Stable (via Wahgo Katta shrine) and check with Beedle. He will have a few electric darners for sale at 10 rupees each.
Where to find electric darners
If you don’t want store-bought dragonflies, there are a couple places where you might find electric darners — Gerudo Desert and Tabantha Tundra. The problem with these places is that it rarely rains — and electric darners only appear in the rain.
There’s one place, though, where you’re all but guaranteed to find some — Hyrule Ridge. Travel to Shae Loya shrine and Tabantha Stable. Stay at the inn or sit at the cooking fire until it rains — it’s basically Seattle here, so you shouldn’t have to wait long. Head to the east and start looking around the tiny ponds on the plains.
The added bonus of catching them here is the large number of other critters you’ll find. There are thunderwing butterflies plus tireless and hot-footed frogs all over. You’ll also come across a bunch of hearty radishes.
How to catch them
OK, you already know how to catch them — you just walk up and grab them. But there are a couple things you can do to make the process easier.
Wear the stealth set or take a sneaky elixir. All of Breath of the Wild’s critters are skittish, so being sneaky will help you gather them.
Take a picture (it’ll last longer). Use your camera rune to get a good closeup of the first electric darner you see, then get your sheikah sensor to track them.
The best place to find an Electric Darner is just northeast of the Tabantha Bridge Stable. However, they will only appear when it is raining or during a thunderstorm. Another great place is around the Thundra Plateau before the completion of the Trial of Thunder as it is under a constant thunderstorm.

Electric Darners can be found on Hyrule Ridge and in the Gerudo Desert. Beedle also sells them at Riverside Stable. They can be used with Monster Parts in a Cooking Pot to make an Electro Elixir, which will temporarily provide Shock Resistance to Link.
Where to Buy Warm Darners. Warm Darners can be purchased for 10 Rupees at the following shops: Beedle at the New Serenne Stable. Beedle at the Snowfield Stable.
Beedle will generally restock if the player fast-travels far away enough, waits a while, and returns, though there are reports of this method not working. The only certainty is that the player must leave the area for Beedle to restock.
Dragonflies are fun to raise but challenging to keep as pets. They are large-winged insects that can grow to 4 inches long. They are also called skimmers, referring to their ability to skim across ponds and other pools of water.
The Cold Darner is most commonly found in the Tabantha Frontier or at Hyrule Ridge, but it is also sold by Maypin at the Gerudo Canyon Stable for 10 rupees.
Where to Get a Propeller and Electric Motor. The Propeller and Electric Motor can be used to create powerful wind currents and propel vehicles further and faster than normal Zonai Fans. These can be found in Gemimik Shrine on the eastern edge of Hyrule, shown in the map above.
Dragonflies spawn in air within a small radius of cattails. If looking to farm dragonflies, it is advised to make space for more cattails to grow, since the critter appears to spawn directly from the cattail itself rather than by normal mob spawning.

Dragonflies needs water to reproduce. In summer, the common green darner buzzes around warm, still water, such as lakes, ponds, wetlands, marshes, and backwater areas of slow streams throughout North America.
