Your project should be finish sanded and sealed before laser engraving. Sealing is necessary to prevent smoke staining of the wood, unless this is an effect you desire. After engraving, you may LIGHTLY sand the surface and then apply your final finish coats which will also seal the engraving.
To clean your laser engraved wood, dab your paper towel in vinegar (you can also use a soft piece of cloth) and then use it to wipe off the residue on your wood. Simply repeat the process until you are satisfied with the result.
If you want to get a quality, professional wood engraving, you need make the proper preparations. Take a look at your wood to be sure that it is sanded and smooth. Make sure that you stain and clear coat your wood before engraving.

To seal the wood surface, apply varnish (I used "Stays Clear" from Benjamin Moore) and let it dry. Mask with blue masking tape. Laser engrave!

My new favorite solution for cleaning wood after laser processing is WHITE VINEGAR! As a side note, I still use the brush and pumice soap on really scorched wood... But if your wood is slightly burnt, discolored, or sticky after laser processing then WHITE VINEGAR will be your BEST FRIEND!
