As I'm sure you remember, papier-mâché is one of the most structured but creative ways to make a big mess: a perfect craft to do with a parent. The best part is you can use Mod Podge to make projects just like this, even easier!
Well, the nice thing about using Mod Podge to make paper mache is that you can use it directly from the bottle. There's no mixing. The Podge can also be used to seal the paint on the newspaper (if you choose to paint).

The paper pulp method
Soak your paper in water overnight or boil it in plenty of water until it dissolves into a pulp. Drain the excess water. Add your adhesive paste and mix it all together. Apply the pulp mache to your backing structure or form and sculpt to your liking.
How many coats should I apply? I would use two – three coats to seal a project. You'll want more coats depending on how much the project will be handled. If it's a piece of furniture under heavy use, I'd even go up to five.

If you apply a new layer on top of a layer that hasn't fully dried it can take even longer for the moisture to work its way out, so in the long run patience (and a fan!) is the best way to go. Don't pop the balloon if the papier mâché is still wet, because the piñata will likely collapse in on itself if you do.

But what you can't speed up is cure time – which is different than dry time. Most Mod Podge formulas dry completely within hours or overnight, but are not fully cured for 3 – 4 weeks.
With a medium coat of Mod Podge, the project should cure in about 2 to 3 weeks. Allow for longer curing times if applying more or thicker coats.
