Does flowering ruin basil?
If your basil plant is sending up flower spikes, it's in the middle of its life cycle. To keep your basil making green leaves for your use, pinch or cut off (aka deadhead) the flower spikes. That will keep your basil leaves intact and the plant will continue to make more leaves.
