Do they have cougars in Mexico?
The cougar lives in all forest types, lowland and mountainous deserts and in open areas with little vegetation up to an elevation of 5,800 m (19,000 ft). In the Santa Ana Mountains, it prefers steep canyons, escarpments, rim rocks and dense brush. In Mexico, it was recorded in the Sierra de San Carlos.
In recent studies, there are about 4800 Jaguars in Mexico and 1800 in the Yucatan Peninsula. The largest and most famous big cat in Mexico is the Jaguar, or as the Maya call this majestic feline, Balam. After the tiger and the lion, the Jaguar is the third biggest cat in the entire world.
Today viable, breeding cougar populations are found in just the sixteen states of Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, North Dakota, Texas, and Florida.
In Mexico, the number of jaguars is now growing, increasing to 4,766 animals in 2018 from 4,025 in 2010, a promising sign that conservation strategies are working.

They have been documented mostly in tropical forests, with black leopards in Kenya, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Java, and black jaguars of the Americas in Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Brazil and Paraguay.
Both black and tawny jaguars were hunted to extinction in the United States in the 1940s. Today, the few that remain live in Mexico, Central America, and Brazil.
There is also a smaller panther like cat known as a Jaguarundi found in Mexico and South America.

A total of 126 attacks, 27 of which were fatal, have been documented in North America in the past 100 years. Fatal cougar attacks are extremely rare and occur much less frequently than fatal snake bites, fatal lightning strikes, or fatal bee stings. Children are particularly vulnerable.
Do cougars hurt humans?

Mexico has now had 19 releases of Mexican wolves since 2011, bringing the total wild wolf population in that country to 45. In addition, there have been 14 litters born since 2014: one each in 2014, 2015 and 2016; two each in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020; and three in 2021.

The Mexican lion (Panthera leo mexicana), is a descendant of African/Asiatic lions that escaped from zoos. They are the apex predators in the grassland, living in prides. They mainly prey on buffaloes, bison, horses, zebras, elks, deer, camels, antelopes, and even other large carnivores.
Puma. Also known as a mountain lion or catamount in other parts of North America, the puma has a range that includes the Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and throughout Central and South America. Its prey includes large mammals such as white-tailed deer, which can be found throughout the Yucatan Peninsula.

Experts such as Debra Chase, CEO of the Mountain Lion Foundation, say that cougars are mostly afraid of humans and don't see us as potential prey. Occasionally, though, humans fool them. Quick movements, such as running or bicycling, which make humans resemble prey, sometimes lead to cougar attacks.
Make noise by yelling, blowing a whistle or an air horn. If you have an umbrella, quickly open and close it while facing the cougar. Do not approach the cougar. Give it ample space to run away – don't corner it.
Although dogs offer little value as a deterrent to cougars, they may distract a cougar from attacking a human. Consider erecting a fence around play areas. Keep a radio playing. Make sure children are home before dusk and stay inside until after dawn.
Despite how large and dangerous cougars are, they'll get scared by a sudden loud noise like any other animal. Plus, you can set alarms on timers to make sure they go off at certain times of the day when you've spotted cougars coming onto your property.
