Selling the Model T
The Model T was the first Ford with all its parts built by the company itself. Selling for $850, it was considered a reasonable value, though still slightly higher than the income of the average American worker.
Before the Model T, cars were a luxury item: At the beginning of 1908, there were fewer than 200,000 on the road. Though the Model T was fairly expensive at first (the cheapest one initially cost $825, or about $18,000 in today's dollars), it was built for ordinary people to drive every day.
Ford's Model T was successful not only because it provided inexpensive transportation on a massive scale, but also because the car signified innovation for the rising middle class and became a powerful symbol of the United States' age of modernization.
The original Model A design continued, with running improvements, into 1929. The new Model A was comprised of 6,800 parts compared to its predecessor, which was made up of 5,000 parts. Initially, the Model A was available in nine body types as before with the Model T, and had a starting price of just $460.
The car weighed 1,240 lb (562 kg) and could reach a top speed of 28 mph (45 km/h). It had a 72-inch (1.8 m) wheelbase and sold for a base price of US$750.
