What are Limited Quantities? Limited Quantities refers to dangerous goods that are shipped in small containers which are packed in boxes or shrink-wrapped trays.
Selected dangerous goods packed in small quantities (limited quantity) or very small volumes (excepted quantity) pose a lesser risk in transport than do the same goods packed in larger volumes. Thus they qualify for some relief from robust packaging requirements provided that they are packed and marked properly.
Like its name states, limited quantity refers to certain dangerous goods packaged in small quantities. There is only a maximum number of inner packages or containers permitted for transporting a limited quantity of dangerous goods.
Excepted quantities are another way of shipping small quantities of hazardous goods with less stringent regulations. In most cases, the package may be exempt from marking, UN Packaging, and Labeling requirements outlined in the various regulations.
Examples of Class 3 HAZMAT products include gasoline, nail polish, lighter refills, oil-based paints, paint thinner, and varnish.
A Limited Quantity Exemption may apply to your shipment if you are shipping small quantities of dangerous goods. This exemption is a simpler regulatory alternative to preparing all DG shipments as fully regulated.

The maximum size of the outer packing needs to be less than 30 Kgs (20 kgs if shrink packed). If you see under the excepted quantity (column 7b), there are codes like E0 and E1. These codes signify the maximum quantities in the inner and outer packing for that DG to be carried under excepted quantity.
Size limits: Lithium metal (non-rechargeable) batteries are limited to 2 grams of lithium per battery. Lithium ion (rechargeable) batteries are limited to a rating of 100 watt hours (Wh) per battery.
