Netflix is back with another true crime effort. On May 10, the streamer released the new series Missing: Dead or Alive? If you're a fan of true crime, then you probably know all about the four-episode series.
A follow-up film from the same team behind 2018's Searching, Missing is one of this year's best thrillers, the “Screenlife” film scaring up $48.6 million at the worldwide box office. Missing was released on Digital and Blu-ray back in March by Sony, and the film also made its way onto Netflix last week.
Is Missing based on a true story? No. The actions depicted in this movie are fictional.

Missing is a sequel of sorts to 2018's Searching, which told a story about a father (John Cho) who is desperate to find his missing daughter. It became a surprise critical and commercial hit and was praised for its unique way of telling the entire story through a computer screen.
The series ran from March 15, 2012 to May 17, 2012 on ABC. ABC announced on May 17, 2011, that the series would air as a midseason replacement in 2012. Ten episodes were ordered for the first season. ABC canceled the series on May 11, 2012.

Season 2 of The Missing is connected to Season 1 in two ways, but they're slight enough so as not to deter new viewers. One, it features the same detective, Julian Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo), and in the second instance, it acts as a narrative inversion of that first season's story.

The Missing on BBC1 is like televisual Sudoku, yet it is utterly compelling, brilliantly acted and written, and a match for the much-lauded Scandinavian noir of recent years.

With low ratings and steep declines, it's no wonder that ABC decided not to renew Missing for a second season. The series finale airs next Thursday and will hopefully include enough closure to satisfy the viewers that stuck with it. What do you think?
