What kind of ribbon do you use for ornaments?
I'll share some of my favorite ribbon sources below, but my favorites are always velvet, satin or silk. I love to use varying thickness of ribbon, anywhere from 3/8″ to 1.5″ work really well. Some of my favorites this year have been this velvet ribbon and this frayed edge silk ribbon.
If your tree exudes a classic Christmas vibe, try something like a wide Tartan ribbon. If your style leans a bit more rustic, jute or burlap ribbon is probably the choice for you. For the glitz-and-glam holiday lovers, a ribbon with metallic hints or made of shiny satin is best.

Add ribbon before ornaments
Begin your tree decorating by adding lights and then the ribbon. Ornaments should always go on last. If you attempt to add ribbon after hanging ornaments, you run the risk of breaking ornaments as you style your tree.
We recommend putting the ribbons first especially if you need to anchor them deep into the branches. Ornaments should go last to avoid bumping and breaking them as you decorate.
Standard size Christmas ball ornaments range from 2” to 4”. These sizes are what most people use for their Christmas trees at home.
Decide if you are going to be using ornament hooks, ribbon, string or maybe even green florist's wire to hang your ornaments. For most people, ornament hooks are the cheapest and easiest way to go.
Wrap Ribbon Vertically
Then, anchor each ribbon at the top of the tree and let them cascade down. To keep ribbons from stiffly resting on top of the branches, work your way down each length of ribbon. Curve and tuck the ribbon around the branches on the way down for a more whimsical look.
I used three different types of ribbons. I recommend getting three or four rolls of ribbon of each kind and returning any extra rolls later. For that reason, don't cut each roll until you are ready to put it on the tree. Wired ribbon is ideal but you can make this work with an un-wired ribbon also.
Ornament sizes can range from mini, standard, and jumbo. Mini ornaments are usually 2 inches in diameter, while standard ornaments can range from 2.5 to 3 inches. Jumbo ornaments, on the other hand, can measure anywhere from 6 to 10 inches in diameter or larger.

Assuming you'd like to adorn your branches with an “in-between” amount of ornaments, a full, 5-foot tree would require 74 small ornaments or 43 large ones, plus about 26 feet of lights.
How many ornaments do you need for a 6 foot tree?
As you might have guessed, the number of decorations will increase the more significant your tree is. A 6 foot Christmas tree will need at least 128 pieces, a 7 foot Christmas tree will need at least 196 decorations, and an 8 foot Christmas tree will need a minimum of 212.

Grosgrain Ribbon
A favorite in the crafting world, grosgrain ribbon, with its hard-wearing fiber blend, is used for all kinds of craft activities. Rayon, velvet, silk, and satin ribbon may be the most common types of fabric ribbon; but cotton, wool, and other synthetics can be processed in ribbon form. Various surface treatments can also be used to change the appearance of cloth ribbon or modify its performance characteristics.
