What is a stitch type 101?
101 – Single Thread Chainstitch
The 101 Single thread chainstitch is formed using just one sewing thread introduced by the sewing needle. Stitch Type 101 is most often used for temporary stitching [or basting]. Its main disadvantage is its tendency to run back from the finishing end of the seam.
Temporary stitches
These stitches are also known as tacking or basting stitches. Usually this stitch is horizontal and it is worked from the right to the left side with a knot. Various kind of tacking/basting stitches are as follows.
Typically, when stitching on 14-count Aida or 28-count evenweave, which are the most widely used cross stitch fabrics, you would use two strands of cross stitch thread for the cross stitch, and one strand of cross stitch thread for the backstitch.
Stitch class 102 is formed using two-needle thread (1and 2), loops of which are passed through the material from the needle side. Thread 2 is intra-looped with thread 1 on the other side of the material.
103 is a chain stitch that is commonly used in a blind hem. There are no visible stitches on the face side, and a chain pattern is visible on the underside. It's formed by a thread carried by a single, curved needle.
Permanent stitches. These stitches are left in the garment and form a part of the stitched garment. They are worked instead of machine stitch. Permanent stitches can be used for both functional and decorative purposes.
1. Running Stitch: This is the simplest form of hand stitch which is used for permanent sewing stitched using same color thread. Hand made seams, darning, gathering and finishing edges can be done with this stitch.
The count of the fabric refers to the number of threads per unit of measure. In the USA, 28 count means 28 threads per inch and in Europe 10 cm means 10 threads per centimeter.
More on stitching on linen in a future post, but in general you can substitute 28-count linen for 14-count Aida, and vice versa, without changing the size of the final design. Similarly, you can swap out 32-count linen for 16-count Aida.
How many strands to use on 22 count Aida?
Embroidery floss is a cotton thread used for stitching. Floss has 6 strands, but usually you will use only 2 strands at a time for stitching and 1 strand for backstitching. On Hardanger fabric (22 count) you usually will use only 1 strand; on 11 count Aida use 3 strands to stitch and 2 to backstitch.
The preferred or more standard size tends to be 14 count aida/28 count evenweave/linen. As a rule it is easier to see the holes using aida fabric and therefore it is quicker to stitch onto and easier for beginners.
But I really want to know which side is the right side!
Run your finger along them, and you may be able to feel that the holes are smooth on one side and pokey on the other. The smooth side is the front of the fabric. This little trick works for all kinds of fabric, not just cross stitch fabric, so now you know!

Most sewing is done in the 2.0 to 2.5 range. If you are foundation paper piecing, you may want to decrease your stitch length so that the paper tears away easier. Top stitching and quilting are usually done in the 3.0 to 3.5 range. Basting and gathering stitches are the longest, from 4.0 – 5.0.

100% PURE LINEN: The lowdown
Linen or pure linen, (referred to throughout this article) is a textile made from the stalk of the flax plant and is laborious to manufacture. Flax plants must be pulled rather than cut from the ground to protect the full length of the fibre.
According to the IMT Comfort Index the ratio between insulation and breathability indicates what fabrics are most comfortable to wear. 100% Linen scores the highest comfort with an index of 0.388 followed by cotton with a score of 0.386 and PES being last.
Hardanger is 100% cotton and it is usually a 22 count fabric. Its a relatively inexpensive fabric, especially when compared to linen. Hardanger is a method of embroidery and hardanger fabric was designed specifically for it.
Linen has a higher thread count than Aida, so it gives a more refined look to your finished piece. Stitching on linen might seem daunting if you are new to cross stitch, but it is no more difficult than stitching on Aida.
The fabric used for cross stitch is usually aida or Evenweave/linen (these two come in the same counts but are made of different materials; Evenweave is cotton and modal and obviously linen is linen). These fabrics are perfect for cross stitch because they are weaved evenly.
Look at your chart and count the number of stitches in each direction. Divide this number by the number of stitches to 2.5cm (1in) on the fabric of your choice and this will determine the completed design size. For example, 140 stitches divided by 14-count aida equals a design size of 10in (25.5cm).

A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO CROSS STITCH FABRICS
Generally, aida is the easiest when learning to stitch and is the most popular. It's made from 100% cotton and comes in various “counts” meaning holes per inch. “14 count aida” means that there are 14 holes/squares per inch of the fabric.
Pick the color of floss you are starting with and cut a length about 18 inches long. If you go much longer than this, the thread is more likely to get knotted when you stitch. Most embroidery floss is made up of six strands of thread twisted together.
