Why did McDonald's start using paper straws?
The straw initiative forms part of the chain's 'Better M' platform to support the environment. Another change was a makeover of McFlurry packaging to eliminate the need for a separate plastic lid.
McDonald's banned plastic straws from its restaurants in September 2018 as part of a green drive. Although the plastic straws that were being given out by the restaurant were still recyclable, the fast-food giant wanted to take things one step further as they announced that it was making way for paper straws.
McDonald's made the change in December and estimate it will take 500 million plastic straws out of circulation annually. The restaurant chain will also scrap plastic cutlery in March, 2021.
1888 Marvin Stone, an American inventor, files a patent for drinking straws made of manila paper. Previously people used natural rye grass straws which left a grassy flavor in their beverages. Stone created the prototype for his paper straw by spiraling a strip of paper around a pencil.
In a bid to be more environmentally friendly, McDonald's has pledged to phase out plastic straws by 2020. The plastic straws will be replaced with paper versions instead.

The truth is that paper straws are not actually any more environmentally friendly than their plastic counterparts. In fact, they may even be worse for the planet. This is because the process of making paper straws requires a lot of energy and results in the emission of greenhouse gases.
McDonald's Corp. has confirmed that it will replace all polystyrene beverage cups with paper cups at its 14,000 U.S. outlets. The move comes in response to a shareholder proposal filed by environmental advocacy group As You Sow in 2011, asking it to stop using foam.
