Are 5 pound coins worth anything? ›

A normal base metal Crown may fetch £10 or more if particularly desirable. The gold and silver commemorative £5 coins will often be worth far more on metal value alone, and their more limited mintage figures may result in an even high price.

Five pound coins are legal tender but are intended as souvenirs and are rarely seen in circulation. The coins are sold by the Royal Mint at face value and also, with presentation folders, at a premium to that face value.

Out of the Brilliant Uncirculated £5 coins sold in individual The Royal Mint Packs, the 2014 Queen Anne £5 is the rarest. This coin has a mintage of just 12,181 and was struck to mark the 300th anniversary since the death of Queen Anne.

The most expensive Queen Elizabeth II coin was a commemorative coin minted in late 2023. This coin, minted to mark the one-year anniversary of the Queen's death, is worth $23 million. It's called "The Crown."

This matters little, as all Crown coins are now worth far more than their denomination or face value. Currently, depending on their condition, copper-nickel versions of the Charles and Diana Royal Wedding coins are selling for around 80p to £4.

The dates '1961' and '1997' appear below her chin, with the inscription 'IN MEMORY OF DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES'. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, introduced to British coinage the previous year as the fourth such official coinage effigy.

Coins minted since 1818 remain legal tender with a face value of 25 pence. Although all "normal" issues since 1951 have been composed of cupro-nickel, special proof versions have been produced for sale to collectors, and as gift items, in silver, gold, and occasionally platinum.

The Royal Mint issued a £5 coin to commemorate the millennium. The coin was minted in both 1999 and 2000 to mark the transition into a new century. The reverse design of the £5 coin shows a clock face, with the hour and minute hands approaching midnight between the years 1999 and 2000.

1849 Double Eagle Gold Coin

The one remaining specimen is carefully preserved at National Numismatic Collections at the Smithsonian Institution. The 1849 Double Eagle is currently the rarest and most valuable coin in the world, with an estimated value of around $20 million.

The Royal Mint issued a £5 coin wholly designed by popular sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The reverse features a left-facing profile of the Queen Mother wearing a diamond tiara with her signature beneath. This was the very first time this had appeared on a British Coin.

The higher the score the more valuable a coin is likely to be. The rarest coin on the index, known as the Edinburgh City 2011 £1 coin, is selling for as much as £34 - more than thirty times its value. The 2011 Cardiff City £1 coin has sold for £20 and the London City 2010 coin is selling for £10.
