What happens if a letter Cannot be delivered? ›

Undeliverable as Addressed Mail

If we are not able to deliver the mail as addressed, we will use the return address on the mailpiece and try to return it to the sender.

If you didn't set your delivery preferences yet, your postman will place a failed delivery notice in your letterbox. In that case, your parcel is not available immediately. You will receive an email stating when you can pick up your parcel at the Pick-up point.

There are many reasons as to why you wouldn't get mail or packages such as the shipping label falling off, the address or recipient name getting smeared in case of bad weather, or the most common reason of all, an incorrect address. Can a Postman refuse to deliver mail? ›

USPS can refuse to deliver to a property if they cannot safely reach it and the road isn't being maintained. If your service gets withdrawn, you may have to contact USPS in order to get it reinstated and restart your mail deliveries, so it's best to avoid this if you can.

People sometimes make mistakes and put the wrong postage on letters. What happens in the case of insufficient postage being used? If the postage that has been used is too low, we charge a fee, via either post-payment if you are the sender or a delivery fee if you are the recipient.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), you aren't legally required to return merchandise that was sent to you by accident. You are within your legal rights to keep it as a gift, and merchants cannot demand that you pay for something you did not order.

When your mail says it is out for delivery but does not come, the only thing you can do is wait. Can You Pick Up a Package from USPS Before It Gets Delivered? Right out of the gate, you should know that it's not only possible to pick up a package from USPS before delivery is initiated (or completed) but that it's actually super simple and straightforward to make happen, too.

If you send an unstamped letter without a return address, the envelope will be delivered to the destination address marked on the envelope. Then, the receiver will have to pay the postage fee.
