Introducing the Princess Diana 5 Pound Coin

Diana Frances Spencer was born 1 July 1961 in Norfolk, England. As part of the Spencer family, she became known as Lady Diana Spencer when her father became the Earl Spencer in 1975. She joined the Royal Family in July 1981 with her marriage to Prince Charles, the oldest son of Queen Elizabeth II. From the marriage, she had two sons, William and Harry, and gained the title Princess of Wales, among many others. Known as the ‘People’s Princess’, she was celebrated for her charity work and her efforts in hiring awareness to HIV/AIDS, cancer, and mental illnesses. Sadly, she was killed in a car crash in 1997.

1999 Princess Diana 5 Pound Coin

The Royal Mint issued this commemorative 5-pound coin in 1999 after public opinion called for a way to remember the Princess. The design is a simple bust portrait of the late Princess facing to the right by David Cornell. Surrounding the portrait is the phrase ‘In Memory of Diana Princess of Wales.’ The years of her life and death are at the bottom of the coin. The obverse side features the fourth crowned portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
