Tekken has long been the subject of the "even-number curse." For every great Tekken game like Tekken 3 and Tekken 5, a disappointing game followed in Tekken 4 or Tekken 6. This even extended to Tekken Tag Tournament where Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was such a financial disappointment that almost derailed the entire franchise. Tekken fans were reasonably concerned that Tekken 8 would kill any positive momentum gained by the amazing Tekken 7.

EA Sports FC 24 Brings The World Together Like The Sport It's Based On

The EA Sports FC, formally FIFA, series has been the premier football (soccer) simulator since the mid-1990s, with a brief hiatus during Pro Evolution's peak in the early to mid-2000s. The latest game in the series may be yet another version of the game that features predatory tactics in its Ultimate Team mode but It's still the most advanced game of its kind by a long way.

Players are able to team up with and go against, friends on the last two generations of Xbox and PlayStation (though play between generations isn't possible) as well as PC, and the player pool is so enormous that finding a game is remarkably easy at any time of day. Halo Infinite Provides A Big Playerbase For The Legendary Franchise

The Halo series has struggled to recapture the magic that the first three games managed to create but Halo Infinite is probably the closest they've got, and the multiplayer is its best feature. The combat has somehow been overhauled and yet kept immediately recognizable, culminating in the most solid mechanics of the entire series.

Players are able to play between Xbox generations and with PC players though this setting can be disabled for those who feel mouse and keyboard can provide an unfair advantage. Rocket League Is Still As Fun And As Competitive As 2015

It might seem obvious now that combining very fast cars, explosions, and sports could lead to a game that is loved the world over, but Rocket League did come out of nowhere. Though it was released in 2015, the game continues to receive regular updates and the player base remains at a high level, regularly appearing in the top echelons of the concurrent player charts.

The competitive scene for the game is also significant and more casual players can enjoy a slice of that in the game's various multiplayer modes. Though crossplay can be disabled, matchmaking is entirely open with no priority for those on the same platform, so it's just as likely to be a mixed lobby as one localized to the same console.

Hands down, Rocket League is one of the greatest concepts in the history of video games. There’s no way to explain what type of game it is because there’s truly never been anything like it. When Rocket League was first released in 2015, the gaming world paused, and collectively speculated what it would be like. It’s a sports game, but with cars, but it isn't a racing game? Not something easy to wrap your head around. If you haven’t played it before, just believe us when we tell you, the chance of you loving this game is very high. Chivalry 2 Sees PlayStation And Xbox Players Clash Swords

Developer Torn Banner Studios had a significant job on their hands when working on the sequel for the wildly enjoyable (and successful) Chivalry. Thankfully, they did an incredible job improving on the solid foundations they'd created. The medieval hack-n-slash doesn't have a campaign, instead choosing to place players in huge pitched battles that aim to provide a deeply realistic rendition of combat in the era.

Visually, it's a stunning and gritty experience that delivers mud and blood in equal measure. Players are able to take on a number of different classes/roles, from mounted knights to the humble and occasionally hilarious lute player, whose sole purpose seems to be only to bring joy to the battlefield. Though it may not be for everyone, Chivalry 2 is a barrel of fun for those willing to give it a chance and crossplay allows PlayStation, Xbox, and PC users to play together.

Street Fighter 6 Continues Street Fighter's Long History With Crossplay

As a game, Street Fighter 6 might seem to be the more sanitized cousin of the Mortal Kombat series but as the true OG of the fighting genre, it does remain at the top of the tree. With over seven years between this and the last game, fans had a long time to wait but when it did eventually arrive in the middle of 2023, there was almost nothing to be disappointed with aside from some inevitable balancing issues.

Though it does have an impressive single-player campaign, the focus on multiplayer is clear with crossplay available between consoles and PC and support for up to 16 players. It's nothing new as Capcom has utilized crossplay since the PS3 and Vita versions of Street Fighter X Tekken in 2012. SF6 is full of casual options are there for those who just want to have fun and competitive paths are hugely populated and rewarding for those willing to put the time in. If 2023 was the year of the fighting game, SF6 led the charge, and with new characters coming fast and furious there is sure to be a character for everyone.

Pokémon Unite Is A Rare Cross-Platform Nintendo Game

It's surprising to think there's a cornerstone Nintendo franchise that has crossplay capabilities, given how tightly the company holds onto its exclusives. Pokémon Unite changed that in 2021, becoming the first Pokémon game with crossplay functionality after decades of games with multiplayer capabilities.

Pokémon Unite is a free-to-play MOBA where two teams of three to five players compete for the highest score after ten minutes of play. Overwatch 2 Is Much Of What Players Loved Of Overwatch

The enormous debate around whether a direct sequel to the original Overwatch was a good idea was temporarily quelled by the prospect of an expansive single-player. In a perhaps unsurprising twist of fate, that was very recently canceled, leaving just the multiplayer mode behind and a game that remains a remarkably similar version of the first.

That said, the original Overwatch was a brilliant online party shooter for those who didn't want to take it seriously and a hyper-competitive, e-sports titan for those who operated at the other end of the scale. With full crossplay support, the game has a very healthy player base and there are far worse places to spend a few hours with friends or other players online.

The Overwatch franchise continues with Overwatch 2, the sequel to Blizzard's team-based PVP online shooter. Marking a significant departure from the original, Overwatch 2 reduced its team size from 6v6 to 5v5. In addition, it switched from a full-priced entry into a free-to-play model available on all modern consoles. The sequel also has changed how players earn cosmetics and other items, as Blizzard has opted for a season pass system prevalent in the genre instead of the loot box system in the original title. Additionally, players will be able to engage in more cooperative play in PVP and in a new PvE mode where players group together in teams of four against computer-controlled opponents. Overwatch 2 will allow players to play one of thirty heroes at launch and one of three classes when it launches on October 4 2022.

Mortal Kombat 1 Is A Bloody Good Time With Crossplay

It might seem logical to think that at some point Mortal Kombat's mixture of ultraviolence and bonkers story might become tiresome but that day is yet to arrive. Mortal Kombat 1 is a noticeable improvement over the last few, offering greatly updated visuals and gameplay that rewards players who learn their character combos and time them properly. Its Kameo system gives players greater individuality from Mortal Kombat 11.

The developers had a real eye on Krossplay (as they hilariously referred to it) and as a result, players can join those on other consoles for some melee brutality. Equally, Xbox or PlayStation pals can join one another via the lobby system to truly test the bounds of their friendships in the most violent and well-polished game of its kind. However, the much-maligned Switch version lacks crossplay functionality. Maybe it's for the best.

Helldivers 2 Is The Hit New Cross-Platform Sensation

Helldivers 2 is the biggest multiplayer release of 2024 so far. This third-person shooter takes players into the deep recesses of space as they try to protect numerous planets from large insects and robotic foes.

The galactic war of Helldivers 2 is organic, being tides can shift at any time, meaning players will have to unite and defend and liberate planets that need it most. While Helldivers 2 is crossplay, it's recently run into controversy with the game's new PlayStation account requirement, even for those on PC. This led to PC players requesting refunds and review-bombing the game. Thankfully, Sony has since walked back on those plans, which means this fantastic cross-platform game will still have plenty of PC players!

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout Is A Knockout For Anyone Looking For Silly Fun

Few games arrive on the scene in quite the same way that Fall Guys did at the height of the pandemic in August 2020. Perhaps due, in part, to the enforced isolation that many people were placed into, the game's blend of childlike, cartoony art direction and simple gameplay mechanics proved to be the perfect tonic.

Players are tasked with progressing their adorable little bean avatar through a series of obstacle courses and mini-games to finish in the top half or on the victorious team. Each round will feature fewer and fewer players until a final challenge crowns a solo victor. It's the ultimate party game and supports crossplay between all major consoles and PC.

Elden Ring Brings Help From Different Console Realms

Barely scraping onto this list thanks to its support for players who want to team up with friends on the older generation of the same console line, Elden Ring is every bit the game that its reception suggested. Perhaps slightly unusual in the way it approaches multiplayer, the system feels more at home here than it did in other FromSoftware games like Dark Souls.

Players can leave messages behind for others to discover, and it's frankly a godsend to be able to summon another body to help with some of the game's more notoriously difficult boss fights. Sure, it's not a traditional multiplayer experience, but it is a spectacular RPG that is all the better when occasionally enjoyed with others especially once its expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, releases in June.

Diablo IV Is One Of The Best Multiplayer Games Of 2023

Blizzard has had a very up-and-down few years and the arrival of Diablo IV was, for some, supposed to mark the start of a new and more positive era for the company. Anticipation for the game was off the charts and what fans got was a very good ARPG that perhaps hasn't reached the heights that it should — yet.

The third game in the series also suffered from intense issues on release that were gradually ironed out and patched into oblivion. What players were left with was a post-Reaper of Souls world in which they finally got the Diablo game they deserved. With a very healthy player base and extensive crossplay opportunities, there is every chance that could happen again.
