Why You Should Get It

  • The unique step on the dustpan meant we didn’t have to bend over to hold it in place.

Keep in Mind

  • The metal handle makes this pick a little heavier than others.

Overall, the best broom we tested was the O-Cedar Pet Pro Broom. The broom passed every test with flying colors, leaving us impressed with many of its features.

The set comes with the broom head and a metal handle. The handle arrives in three pieces that need to simply get screwed together. The handle is metal, so it’s a bit heavier than some of the other brooms on our list. However, we liked the heft and felt the material ensured the broom would be more durable than others.

The broom’s bristles were sturdy and flexible, a unique double-bristle design means it’s made of two types. The firm black bristles got all the more significant debris, while the softer gray bristles served as a double check to sweep up any bits left behind. We also liked the slightly angled design on the broom head since it made it easier to get under furniture and into corners.

Another unique aspect of this set is the included dustpan. The handle is angled, so you simply step on the handle with your foot while sweeping debris into the dustpan. Not only does this create a strong seal with the floor, but it also means you won’t have to bend over in an awkward position to sweep up debris. There’s also a built-in comb on the dustpan to clean the bristles, a nice added feature.

Why You Should Get It

  • The broom was very lightweight, making it easy to use.

Keep in Mind

  • The soft bristles may not be sturdy enough to sweep up fine debris.

The Casabella Basics Angled Broom and Dustpan Cleaning Set is less expensive than other options and easy to assemble, making it one of the best brooms we tested. This basic broom set comes with a three-piece handle that quickly gets put together, a broom head, and a dustbin.

At just over 11 inches wide, this is one of the smaller broom heads on our list. We didn’t think the size was a dealbreaker, however, as it may help some people who need to get into tight spaces.

We noted that the plastic bristles were flexible and full and performed well in most tests. However, they did leave behind minor bits of debris when we were testing it with sawdust. Because they were so flexible, they may need to be more sturdy to sweep up small bits.

Along with the broom handle and head, this set includes a dustbin. We love that the dustbin snaps onto the broom base for easy storage and space savings. There’s an included comb on the dustbin body, but the comb is small, and in our tests, it wasn’t very effective in removing hair, which had to be done by hand.

Why You Should Get It

  • The broom handle can extend from 39 to 54.75 inches.

Keep in Mind

  • Since the dustpan attaches to the broom and folds up, some bristles can get caught in the folding process.

The OXO Good Grips Large Sweep Set passed all our cleaning tests with flying colors. The set includes a broom and a separate dustbin. With its long handle, there’s no need to lean over when cleaning. While the broom has an extendable handle that can quickly move from 39 to 54.75 inches, the dustpan handle stays 39 inches tall.

We found the broom was lightweight but sturdy enough to work well and maneuver between and under furniture well. Overall, the broom was effective in our tests. It did leave behind a bit of debris on the first pass, but after just a few passes, the messes were cleaned entirely.

We liked how the dustbin was locked in place, so when it was down for collection, there was no chance of it spilling out the swept-up debris.

The dustpan attaches to the broom and folds up for storage. The slim design means it doesn’t take up too much space, so it’s suitable for those with limited storage or small homes. During testing we found that occasionally, upon folding and storing the dustpan, some bristles got caught and bent out of shape. It’s easy to remedy, and if you are aware, you can quickly free any trapped bristles.

Why You Should Get It

  • The broom excelled at picking up hair.

Keep in Mind

  • Some debris took a lot of work to pick up.

The FURemover Pet Hair Rubber Broom is the best choice for picking up pet hair. The innovative tool is almost like a carpet scraper with a telescoping handle extending from 36 to 60 inches long. Run it along a carpet, and the rubber bristles will easily capture the pet hair.

On one side of the broom head is a squeegee for collecting liquids. We found the squeegee side was pretty effective at moving liquids around, but it didn’t absorb them like a mop, so you may not be able to rely on it as an effective cleaning tool. We also noted that some debris took a lot of work to clean.

The wide design limits maneuverability, so it’s best used on carpeted surfaces. Lightweight and less expensive than other options, we still think this choice is a wise investment if you’ve got a pet that sheds a lot.

Why You Should Get It

  • This broom is ideal for heavy-duty work or use outdoors.

Keep in Mind

  • Dust and debris easily get trapped within the thick bristles.

The KeFanta Push Broom is a larger, heavy-duty broom that comes with a 63-inch handle, which is longer than other options. Though it’s not adjustable, the broom base attaches at a 45-degree angle, so it’s comfortable to use and you won’t need to bend over to use the broom.

At 24 inches wide, this push broom is easy to use outdoors and would be great for pushing leaves, yard debris, and even light snow around. The broom performed well when it came to moving the more oversized test materials around during testing, but the smaller materials got stuck in the bristles.

Heavy and secure, we liked the heft of the broom but noted there could be more padding on the handle, especially if you planned to use this push broom for extended periods. Plus, there’s no dustbin included, so you’ll need to use your own.

Why You Should Get It

  • We loved the flexible and firm bristles that made it easy to clean.

Keep in Mind

  • With harder surfaces, we found that we had to sweep a few times to get it totally clean.

For an indoor/outdoor option, the best choice is the versatile Libman Precision Angle Broom. This pick boasts a sturdy metal handle and bristles made out of a material created with recycled water bottles.

In our tests, we praised the bristle material for being flexible and firm to sweep up small household particulates and larger outdoor debris like leaves and yard waste. There’s an angled cut on the bottom of the broom which helps reach corners, around furniture, or into other tight crevices in your home.

We tested this broom on several surfaces and found that when it came to harder surfaces, it took a few sweeps to get the area totally clean. Though not a dealbreaker, it’s worth keeping in mind depending on your needs.

Why You Should Get It

  • The firm, flexible bristles are built in three layers for extra strength.

Keep in Mind

  • There’s a padded part of the handle, but we didn’t think it was in a logical spot where your hand goes.

The Yocada Heavy-Duty Broom is made from a 54-inch plastic pole that easily assembles from three parts and a broom head with polypropylene bristles. In our sweeping tests, this heavy-duty broom passed every test with flying colors. It effectively removed all debris in its path and achieved a clean sweep.

We noted padding on the top of the handle intended for extra comfort. We didn’t think it was placed in the most logical spot, however, so we thought it was a bit of a wasted feature.

Ideal for indoors or outdoors, the bristles on this broom are firm and flexible, so they’re able to handle big and small needs. We appreciated that the broom is not oversized, so the head could still effectively fit under furniture and was easy to maneuver. There’s no dustpan included, so you’ll need to supply your own.

Why You Should Get It

  • The round wooden handle was comfortable to use.

Keep in Mind

  • Hair got stuck in the bristles and needed to be manually removed.

For an old-fashioned style, the best choice is the Rubbermaid Heavy-Duty Corn Broom. While the round wooden handle was quite comfortable, we shared that there’s no padding on this pick, so if you’re sweeping an extensive job, you may want to consider wearing gloves to avoid blisters.

In our tests, the broom performed well on flat surfaces when sweeping larger debris. When we moved to small debris tests, the broom could not sweep up all the materials as the bristles were too thick and stiff to get it all up.

We faced some challenges during our hair test as well. The hair got twisted and stuck in the dense bristles, so we needed to remove the trapped hair by hand. Additionally, the flat bottom and thick bristles made it very hard to get into corners or around furniture–the broom just wasn’t able to maneuver like others on our list could.

The Bottom Line

Overall, we found that the O-Cedar Pet Pro Broom & Step-On Dustpan PowerCorner is the best broom to consider. The broom passed our tests with flying colors and comes with an innovative dustpan that can be used without bending down.

Our Testing Process

To find the best brooms, we tested over 20 in our Des Moines, Iowa testing lab. During testing, we evaluated each broom based on durability, design, performance, and value.

To start, we assembled each broom and measured the width of the bristles. If extendable, we fully extended the broom and measured the longest measurement. The broom was measured again when it was condensed as well.

We created a testing area in our lab with various floor surfaces to mimic common floor materials in homes. This included vinyl, wood, and marble. To test sweeping capabilities, we used multiple materials to mimic common materials, sizes, and makeup that people have to sweep up. Our test materials included flour, sawdust, orzo, sand, and wig hair.

We included maneuverability tests to note how well the broom head moved through different areas and how well it could sweep and capture debris in each spot. Finally, we tested how much debris was left in the broom’s bristles. If a dustpan was included with the broom, we noted how well it worked, if a debris line remained after sweeping, and how effectively it emptied.

What to Know About Brooms Before Shopping

Handle Length

The length of the broom handle is an important consideration when shopping for a broom that fits for your needs, as it affects the ergonomics and usability of the broom.

“A handle that is too short may require you to bend over excessively while sweeping, causing discomfort or strain on your back,” Sokolowski says. “On the other hand, a handle that is too long may be difficult to maneuver. Ideally, choose a broom with a handle length that allows you to comfortably hold and sweep without straining your posture. Consider your own height and preferences when selecting the appropriate handle length.”

Dills adds that most broom handles are around 3 to 5 feet long. “The ideal length for your broom handle comes down to personal preference, so figure out what’s most comfortable for you,” she says.

A broom with an adjustable handle, such as the Oxo Good Grips Large Sweep Set, is handy for homes with multiple people since it can be extended or shortened to suit the height of each user.

Weight

Brooms have different weights, depending on the type of broom and what the broomstick itself is made of. “For example, a standard indoor broom will have a different weight than a wide push broom,” Dills says. “Generally, brooms weigh anywhere from half a pound to 3 pounds, but this can vary.”

Just like its length, the weight of a broom can also impact your ability to use it effectively. “A broom that is too heavy may be difficult to lift and maneuver, especially if you have limited strength or mobility,” Sokolowski says. “Conversely, a broom that is too light may lack durability or effectiveness in sweeping up debris. Look for a broom that strikes a balance between being lightweight enough for comfortable use and sturdy enough to get the job done effectively.”

The KeFanta Push Broom, our best heavy-duty pick, is 4 pounds and the heaviest on our list. If you prefer a more lightweight pick, our best for pet hair pick, theFURemover Pet Hair Rubber Broom, is 1.25 pounds and one of the lightest we tested.

Bristle Material

Broom bristles can be made from synthetic or natural bristles, or a combination of both, and can be soft, medium, or hard. Dills notes that soft bristles are best for sweeping up smaller pieces of dirt, crumbs, hair, and other items indoors, while harder bristles are better for tackling larger debris or outdoor needs. When choosing a broom, you’ll want to consider the pros and cons of each type:

  • Synthetic: Brooms with synthetic bristles, often made of nylon or polypropylene, are versatile and suitable for general household cleaning. They are durable, easy to clean, and work well on various floor types.
  • Natural: Brooms with natural bristles, typically made from materials like corn, like the Rubbermaid Commercial Products Heavy-Duty Corn Broom, or horsehair, are softer and more delicate. They are ideal for sweeping fine particles or debris on smooth surfaces but may not be as durable or practical on rough surfaces.
  • Combination: Some brooms feature a combination of synthetic and natural bristles, offering a balance of durability and sweeping effectiveness. These types of brooms can be suitable for various surfaces and tasks.

Broom bristles also come in either flagged and unflagged options. Flagged bristles have frayed ends for collecting smaller particles while unflagged bristles are stiff and straight, making them ideal for larger debris. Unflagged bristles also beat flagged options in terms of durability as they tend to last longer.

“The material of the bristles determines the broom's suitability for different surfaces and cleaning tasks,” Sokolowski says.

Sokolowski suggests considering the type of flooring in your home and your specific cleaning needs when choosing a broom’s bristle material. “Smooth surfaces like hardwood or tile may benefit from softer bristles, while rougher surfaces like concrete or outdoor areas may require sturdier bristles.”

Other Brooms We Tested

BLACK+DECKER Lithium Powered Floor Sweeper

The BLACK+DECKER Lithium Powered Floor Sweeper is an expensive electric broom but after testing it, we didn’t think it was worth the investment. The broom could not pick up small debris on a single pass. When it went over our hair debris test, the hair got tangled in the inner mechanisms, and it was time-consuming to resolve.

MR.SIGA Pet Hair Removal Rubber Broom

After testing, we were not impressed with the MR.SIGA Pet Hair Removal Rubber Broom. We found that the rubber bristles were oddly spaced apart and the handle was uncomfortable to use. Most importantly, it failed at all our debris tests, leaving tons of debris in its wake. The broom comes with a microfiber cloth to pick up liquids, but we found it failed in this aspect, too.

SWOPT Premium Straight Broom

The SWOPT Premium Straight Broom is a large and heavy option, weighing over 5.5 pounds. We found the straight broom too rigid to pick up debris effectively. This broom required multiple passes in many debris tests, yielding only semi-adequate results. Because it’s big and heavy, this pick was also hard to maneuver around furniture, and the flat bottom made it a challenge to get into corners or other tricky spots.

Your Questions, Answered

Where can you buy a broom?

“You can buy a broom from various places, including department stores (i.e., Walmart), home improvement stores like Home Depot, grocery stores, online retailers (Amazon, eBay, walmart.com, etc.), local hardware stores, and even dollar stores,” Sokolowski says.

How much do brooms cost?

“The cost of a broom may vary depending on the type, size, and quality, with prices ranging from under $10 to over $50,” Dills says. The most affordable and effective broom on our list, the O-Cedar Pet Pro Broom & Step-On Dustpan PowerCorner, is less than $20. The BLACK+DECKER Lithium Powered Floor Sweeper has a higher price tag of $50, but it’s not a broom we recommend.

How often will I use a broom?

Regularly sweeping your floors is an important household maintenance chore. “Not only will sweeping often help keep your home clean, but it will also help protect the surface of your floor,” Dills says. In addition to regular sweeping, you should also consider mopping or vacuuming your floors periodically to ensure a thorough cleaning and help reduce allergens in your home.

The frequency of sweeping your floors depends on several lifestyle factors, including the type of flooring, the amount of foot traffic, and the level of dirt and debris present. “If you have areas in your home that receive a lot of foot traffic, such as entryways, hallways, or kitchens, it's a good idea to sweep them daily or every other day,” Sokolowski says. “These areas tend to accumulate dirt, dust, and debris more quickly.”

“For rooms or spaces used regularly but not as heavily, such as bedrooms or living rooms, sweeping once or twice a week is often sufficient to keep them clean,” Sokolowski says. “If you have pets that shed a lot of hair or if you live in an area prone to dust or allergens, you may need to sweep more frequently,” she says.
