Mod Podge Glitter Ornaments
These glitter ornaments also do really well at craft fairs and there are so many ways to customize these cuties.
Before we get started, I’d like to share a few frequently asked questions I’ve gotten about these Mod Podge ornaments. If you want to get directly to the how-to, go ahead and scroll down to read the tutorial.
Do I need to clean the glass ornaments first?
Yes, wash them with mild soap and water or use rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball. You want to make sure there are no fingerprints or oils on your glass surface.
If you plan to glitter the inside, swirl with rubbing alcohol, pour out, and let dry.
Which Mod Podge do I need to use?
I recommend using Mod Podge Gloss with DIY glitter ornaments since it is shiny – and you don’t want anything to dull your sparkle!
Can I use acrylic paint with my glitter ornaments?
You can! Feel free to paint the ornament first with a coat of multi surface craft paint. You’ll need several coats to cover the ornament. Let dry then apply glitter with Mod Podge.
Can I glitter the whole ornament?
Yes! You can use one of these two methods for your glitter ornaments:
Coat the outside of your glass balls with Mod Podge and sprinkle the glitter on (either the entire ornament or parts like we did).
Mix glitter and Mod Podge and swirl around the inside of the ornament. Let drain and dry.
Of course you can’t partially glitter the inside, which is why we did this project on the outside of the ornaments.
How do I seal my glitter ornaments?
You can use Mod Podge Gloss to seal your glitter ornaments, however – yes, it will dull the glitter slightly. It doesn’t bother me personally because I don’t like glitter shedding, and I don’t think the dulling is that bad.
However you can also use a super glossy spray sealer like Krylon Glitter Blast, and that limits dulling of the glitter. Like I said, I prefer a little dull glitter to it shedding everywhere!
Are you ready for the tutorial? Let’s get started.
Step 1: First, you’ll want totake your Mod Podge, pour a little bit onto a piece of parchment paper or foil, and create your design on your ornament. I did simple dots, as well as free-form lines. Just don’t let this step take too long–Mod Podge dries fast!
Step 2:Gently sprinkle your glitter all over the Mod Podged parts of your ornament. Let dry.
Step 3:Once dry, use a dry foam brush to gently remove the excess glitter. You may have to go back and touch up some spots (I know I did!)
Step 4:Once completely dry, tie a pretty piece of twine or ribbon on end (if desired), and then make another batch–these are so fun to create and gift, it’s hard to stop at just a few 🙂
Thank you so much for letting me share my glitter ornaments with you all today! You can find lots of other tutorials and inspiration on my blog! Have a lovely day!

If glitter rubs off a Christmas ornament then stop it from happening by coating it with a thin layer or spray on glue or hairspray. You can use these items to add extra protection and prevent the glitter from rubbing off in the first place.
How long do you let the ornaments sit before you use them? I recommend at least 24 hours! The longer you let them sit the better though. I like to set mine upside down in an egg carton for a week so that the polycrylic can dry and the glitter can set.
You can use mod podge to apply a thin glossy layer on the glittered areas and leave them to dry. You can also opt for a glitter sealer spray like Krylon`s glaze spray to achieve a quality glossy permanent finish.
For sealant options, you can use either glue, mod podge, or glitter sealant spray for the best results. You can also mix some glitter directly into a small amount of glue or mod podge to create your own glitter glues and paints.
Applying glitter to wood is an easy way to give it some sparkle. To apply the glitter, you'll need a spray adhesive, school glue, Decoupage, Mod Podge, or acrylic paint. All you need to do is paint or spray your wood with your adhesive to help the glitter stick, then, sprinkle your glitter on top.
If you love the look of sparkle but don't love the glittery mess, try Extreme Glitter Mod Podge. The blingy-ness is built in! It's used in a lot of holiday crafts in addition to day-to-day.
Apply a top layer of Mod Podge to seal in the glitter.
You could also use watered down school glue to create an opaque sealant for your crafting project. The top layer of Mod Podge acts as a sealant and will prevent the glitter from flaking away.
Fill the water bottle with vegetable oil, leaving one-half inch free on top. Oil is the secret for glitter to float in the water. Add ultra-fine Bioglitter™ using a plastic funnel.
Application Trick. If you are applying your chunky festival glitter to the body, Vaseline is said to be the best product for making your glitter stick. Spread the petroleum jelly evenly on the area of the skin, then press the glitter in with your hand or a brush and wait for it to dry.
Multiple layers of clear acrylic spray will not only seal in glitter but will give your item a glossy look. To avoid your glittered piece from looking glossy, purchase an acrylic coating that has a matte finish.
Add a touch of sparkle to your decoupage projects! Mod Podge Sparkle is a great way to add a fun, festive touch to fashion accessories, jewelry, holiday projects, kids crafts and more. This all-in-one decoupage glue, sealer and finish dries fast and clear, holds tight and protects your creations.
Spray over the top of your entire project with a layer of the Mod Podge Ultra. That really makes this the best glue for glitter! It locks it in and it is not going anywhere! I allowed that to dry completely then I added a bit of “grass” with some green glitter using basically the same method as above.
Can I seal the glitter with hairspray? No. If you make this project following the directions for applying the glitter with Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge and sealing the glitter with Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge, the glitter will have permanently adhered to the glass.
Mod Podge Mega Glitter can be applied directly onto a variety of surfaces such as the following: wood, tin, terra cotta, canvas, papier mache, glass or ceramics (glazed or bisque), and even rigid plastic.
So I started off with my glitter, the item I wanted to cover, a paint brush and Mod Podge Gloss. You need to make sure you have the gloss version not the matte! Paint the item you want to cover in a thin, even coat of Mod Podge and shake over your glitter until the item is covered. Leave this to dry completely.
Sometimes you may not have the time to wait for your glitter glue project to dry on its own, so you need a method that can help dry glitter glue fast. In that case, you can use a hairdryer, a fan, or the power of the sun to help speed up the drying process.
You have to pull up a corner and allow air to get between the paper and the surface to pick it up. Glitter sticks to you because of moisture present on the surface of your skin. Water is referred to as a “polar molecule” because it has both a positively-charged end and a negatively-charged end (similar to a magnet).
How to Shine Cloudy Glassware: Vinegar. Distilled white vinegar is like the “cure-all” for home cleaning projects! If you have a lot of glassware to shine, I would suggest letting them soak first in a mixture of one part water to one part white vinegar.
Let me give you the short answer to the question “does Mod Podge dry clear?”: YES! Mod Podge looks milky in the bottle, but when applied properly, it dries completely clear.
Mod podge is a fantastic and affordable option for sealing glitter onto almost any surface. You can stick the glitter onto your project with mod podge and use a second thin layer to seal it in. If you want a shiny finish, we suggest trying mod podge with a gloss finish.
Pour rubbing alcohol into the jar or bottle. Fill about one-quarter of the jar, then add a drop of food coloring. Use a few drops, if you want a more vibrant effect.
Remove the ornament cap and squirt about a tablespoon of the Pledge into the ornament. Swirl the Pledge around and make sure you get a good even coat over the entire inside of the ornament. Pour any excess Pledge back into the bottle (or discard).
'Allow the sealant to dry fully before placing your baubles onto your tree, where they'll hang beautifully all season. 'You can purchase acrylic sealants at most craft stores and they come in a range of different colours. '
A craft glue like Mod Podge or a simple white school glue both work equally well. Press the tip of the brush onto each tip of the pine cone, reloading your brush with glue as needed. Work until each tip is covered with enough glue to catch and hold the glitter in place.
Paint the item you want to cover in a thin, even coat of Mod Podge and shake over your glitter until the item is covered. Leave this to dry completely.
"Vaseline is great for sticking glitter down and is completely safe for the face (and even leaves skin feeling quite smooth underneath)," says Katrina, co-founder of The Gypsy Shrine.
If you don't have any handy, hairspray will work too. Preserve your pinecones with a clear acrylic spray. If you don't have any handy, hairspray will work too.
Mod Podge over the top of the glitter with a formula like Sparkle Mod Podge or Super Gloss.
Spray with a clear acrylic sealer made for glitter. The consensus is that Krylon makes the best, the favorite being their Glitter Blast clear spray. Use something shiny!
The dry time between applications of Mod Podge Mega Glitter is approximately 20–30 minutes, depending upon the thickness of application and the humidity level of the room. Be sure the previous application is thoroughly dry prior to applying the next.
Some glitters will bleed a bit into the glue. This especially happens with Craft Glitter. If you want to use a common inexpensive glue, see if you can find one that dries clear. Aleene's, Elmers and Mod Podge are all good options for clear glues.
As I said before, no, Mod Podge is not waterproof. The longer answer has to do with the makeup of the product. Mod Podge is a craft supply made up of several ingredients, including vinyl acetate. The combination produces a product that is somewhat water resistant, but not waterproof.
